The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Central African Republic (CAR), Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, has called for an immediate cessation of violence affecting certain regions in accordance with the agreement signed on Monday in Rome between the Government of CAR and representatives of the 14 Central African armed groups. The Special Representative emphasizes that the agreement lays down "the foundations for lasting peace and stability in CAR".

BANGUI / GENEVA (20 June 2017) – The Central African Republic (CAR) is witnessing an “unsustainable” situation amid the spread of armed groups and increasing human rights violations, and the government must act now, a United Nations expert has warned.

The independent expert on human rights in the country, Marie-Thérèse Keita Bocoum, said action by armed groups was spreading at a “worrying” rate in central and southern areas, particularly in the regions of Ouaka, Mbomou and Basse-Kotto.

Armed confrontations in Alindao – a town in the south of the Central African Republic – killed over a hundred people and caused massive displacement. A Cordaid-led humanitarian intervention reaches 24.000 internally displaced persons just two weeks into the crisis.

The first half of May saw an increase in violent clashes between ex-Seleka armed groups (predominantly Muslim) and Anti Balaka militias (largely perceived as Christian), especially in the towns of Bangassou and Alindao. Many tens of thousands of Central Africans are displaced by the May conflict.

Since the beginning of the conflict in December 2013, CERF has allocated nearly $263 million. May 29th marked the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. More than 3,500 peacekeepers have died since the first mission in 1948. As of April 30, 2017, over 112,000 troops, observers, police, and civilians representing 124 countries were participating in 16 UN Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKOs) at a cost of $7.87 billion. However, UN peacekeeping represents only one part of the international community’s investment toward the prevention of relapse into violent conflict.
