Botswana: Limited HIV/AIDS information puts remote area dwellers at risk

SELEBI PHIKWE - Limited access to information on the prevention of HIV/AIDS puts remote area dwellers at risk of contracting the virus, participants at the World AIDS Day commemoration in Selebi-Phikwe observed recently.

The event was organised by Selebi Phikwe DMSAC and Kagiso/ Sesame Ward Multi-Sectoral Aids Committee (WMSAC), in collaboration with the towns AIDS coordinating office.

A Community Conversation Enhancement Programme (CCEP) was used to engage the community to discuss the theme of the event.

Botswana records high TB cases

GABORONE - A Gaborone city councillor, Mr Oabile Mafunga says Botswana has one of the worlds highest burdens of tuberculosis (TB).

Officiating at a TB patient information sharing session in Gaborone last week, Councillor Mafunga who was speaking on behalf of the mayor said the current notification rate in Botswana was at 470 per 100 000 population.

He regretted that more than 10 per cent of institutional admissions and over five per cent of patient attendances were due to TB related diseases.

Botswana/Zimbabwe: Cross-border shoppers disappear

FRANCISTOWN, 17 December 2009 (IRIN) - Relative silence has replaced the bustle that Francistown, on the border between Botswana and Zimbabwe, used to experience during the peak shopping period at Christmas.

For the past decade the town has been the first port of call for Zimbabweans, who were unable to source necessities from basic foodstuffs to petrol and even soap in their own country, and relied on their neighbour for most things.

Faith-based organizations focus on children's rights in Botswana

GABORONE, Botswana, 17 December 2009 - The devastating impact of HIV and AIDS in Botswana has directed much of the country's attention to children's survival. To ensure that children's rights remain a priority here as well, faith-based organizations are lending a hand.

Botswana: Action programme in place to combat desertification

The Minister of Education and Skills Development ,Mrs Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi says Botswana has developed an action programme to help it meet its obligation to the international convention on desertification. She said the National Action Programme (NAP) outlines the strategies and activities to be undertaken to meet the objective of the United Nations Convention to combat desertification (UNCCD). Botswana receives aid of 3 mln USD from China

GABORONE, Dec 03, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Botswana has received yet another grant of 20 million yuan (3 million U. S. dollars) from China in support of the development of the diamond rich southern African country, the government said on Thursday.

China's new offer made on Wednesday brings the total to 30 million yuan (4.5 million dollars) this year.

In May, Botswana received 10 million yuan (1.5 million U. S. dollars) as part of the Chinese technical assistance program to African countries.

HARARE - Rigid immigration laws of neighbouring countries have discouraged Zimbabwean migrants from registering with host governments in order to access humanitarian support and legal protection, according to a new report released Monday.

The report by South Africa's Witwatersrand University said laws and regulations of most neighbouring countries did not cater for Zimbabwean migrants who it said were "forced humanitarian migrants" who fled their country to look for jobs and other means of earning an income to support themselves and their children.

Meeting of SADC Ministers of Health on HIV and AIDS

A two-day joint meeting of SADC Ministers of Health and Ministers responsible for HIV and AIDS was officially opened in Mbabane, Kingdom of Swaziland on Thursday, 12 November 2009 by the Right Honourable Sibusiso Dlamini, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Swaziland.

In his address, the Prime Minister urged SADC Member States to implement SADC policy documents on HIV and AIDS, TB and Malaria.

Southern Africa: Volunteers help to plug 'development' gap
