With above normal rains forecast for much of the SADC region, this issue of the Regional Flood Watch reports the onset of the rains, the likelihood of floods this season and the current state of flood preparedness in the region. JOHANNESBURG, 12 December (IRIN) - Recent heavy rains over large parts of South Africa are unlikely to affect maize exports to the rest of the region, an economist with Grain-SA told IRIN on Wednesday.

"The heavy rains that we have been experiencing in recent weeks is likely to affect the new crop and not the old crop. Our [South Africa's] maize exports would come from the old crop," the economist said.

Southern Africa: IFRC appeals for US $13 million

JOHANNESBURG, 5 December (IRIN) - The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is appealing for more than US $13 million to fund its humanitarian programmes in southern Africa.

Beyond Afghanistan: Humanitarian aid to refugees worldwide faces $126 million funding crisis

Southern Africa: Countries face mixed economic fortunes

JOHANNESBURG, 2 October (IRIN) - The latest economic forecasting from the London-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) shows that most southern African countries are facing mixed economic fortunes.
In Zambia, the EIU noted that the economy was slowly becoming more service orientated despite recent investments in copper. AFRICA: HIV/AIDS could orphan third of Africa's children

Up to one third of children in Southern and East African countries could be orphaned by HIV/AIDS by 2010, the head of a South African charity told the International Forum for Child Welfare (IFCW) in Ireland this week, SAPA reported on Friday.

Southern Africa: SADC to act on expected food shortages

JOHANNESBURG, 15 August (IRIN) - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit has directed its agricultural ministers to meet as soon as possible to examine the region's food security and to develop a regional response to pending shortages.
Saying that the region's food security was greatly influenced by weather conditions, civil strife and national policies, the summit projected a combined all-cereals deficit of 3.87 million mt for the 2001/2002 marketing year, compared to a small surplus of 583,000 mt for the previous year. ZAMBIA: Food shortages loom say farmers
Zambia was expected to experience a huge shortage of maize, the country's staple food, the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) said on Thursday. "A maize shortage is expected this year. ZNFU estimates a shortfall of 120,000 to 150,000 mt," Songowayo Zyambo, ZNFU executive director, was quoted saying in an AFP report.

According to the report, the Zambian government had no official estimates of the shortfall, but had set up a committee to find solutions to the crisis to prevent market distortions
