KENYA: AIDS vaccine tests delayed

The Kenyan authorities said this week that trials of a HIV/AIDS vaccine, which were supposed to begin on Wednesday have been delayed for up to two months. The Kenyan Minister for Public Health, Sam Ongeri, said that government approval would take time. Kenyan and British scientists developed the vaccine after doctors found that a group of prostitutes in the Majengo area of Nairobi did not contract the HIV virus that causes AIDS, despite being repeatedly exposed to infection. The new vaccine is the first to target the A-strain of the virus which

ZAMBIA-DRC: Refugee influx continues
Fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has continued to send refugees streaming across the border into Zambia, aid workers told IRIN on Monday.

JOHANNESBURG, 8 December (IRIN) - African leaders are to assemble in the Nigerian capital Abuja in April next year as the next step in a process of building continent-wide political commitment to action against HIV/AIDS.

ZAMBIA: Many more DRC troops flee to Zambia to escape fighting
The number of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) troops that have fled to northern Zambia since Sunday is now well over 600, a UNHCR representative told IRIN on Wednesday. ZAMBIA: Relocation of Angolan refugees
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said in a press release that Zambia has asked for its help in moving 2,000 former Angolan UNITA combatants and their families who recently entered the North Western Province of Zambia. The refugees will be transferred to a camp in Ukwimi, in the Eastern Province, about 300 km east of the capital Lusaka. The camp has better facilities and is a safe distance from the Angolan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border areas.

Africa: HIV/AIDS figures stabilise

JOHANNESBURG, 29 November (IRIN) - For the first time, there are signs that new HIV/AIDS infections may have stabilised in some parts of sub-Saharan Africa, UNAIDS said in its annual epidemic update released on Tuesday.
New infections in 2000 totalled an estimated 3.8 million compared with 4 million in 1999, the 'AIDS Epidemic Update: December 2000' revealed. Globally there are 36.1 million people living with HIV/AIDS, 25.3 million of these people are in Africa.

UNAIDS said the slight fall in infections was probably a result of two factors. "On the one hand, the epidemic

SOUTH AFRICA: Suspected bombers arrested
Two men have been arrested in what police have described as a break-through in the fight against urban terror in the Western Cape. This followed the discovery of an explosive device outside a cafe in the Cape Town suburb of Belville early Friday morning.

NAMIBIA: Army cites captures along Angolan border
The Namibia Defence Force (NDF) said it had killed 12 Angolan UNITA soldiers, captured six, freed more than 300 civilians and recovered more than 400 head of cattle in recent operations along the country's tense border with Angola. ZAMBIA: Government launches anti-corruption fund
The Zambian government's Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday launched a three-year Civic Education and Corruption Prevention Fund aimed at supporting anti-corruption initiatives through civil society.

The 'Zambia Daily Mail' reported on Thursday that Britain's Department for International Development (DFID) would make about US $82.7 million available to fund eligible organisations which promote the eradication of corruption. It said these organisations would be granted sums of about US $44,000 per project over a three-year period.

ANGOLA: Missing journalist found dead
An Angolan state radio correspondent reported missing in Zambia at the weekend during a UNHCR field trip to an Angolan refugee camp has been found dead. A UNHCR spokesman told IRIN on Tuesday the journalist's body had been found floating in the Zambezi River.

"It is with deep shock that UNHCR has learned of the death of Antonio Paciencia," UNHCR spokesman Fidelis Swai said. "The Zambian authorities in the town of Senenga have informed us that they found his body in the river and that they are still investigating

ANGOLA: Mines claim at least 100 lives
The Angolan government's National Institute for the Removal of Explosive Devices (INAROEE) said at least 100 people have been killed in land mine accidents between January and June this year. In a report released this week, it said that a total of 204 mine accidents had been recorded, resulting in 427 casualties - 100 deaths and 327 injured.

It said 251 of the casualties occurred while people were traveling. Thirty-six were walking when they detonated a land mine, 32 occurred during farming operations, and 24 while people
