ANGOLA: Southern offensive resumes

Angolan government forces this week resumed their offensive against UNITA rebels in the south of the country near the Namibian border in clashes which brought a new wave of refugees into Namibia.

ZIMBABWE: Cholera outbreak
Eight people have died of cholera following an outbreak in the north of the country, the official daily, 'The Herald' reported on Tuesday.

The deaths were reported in Mashonaland West. The newspaper quoted health officials as saying 130 people had contracted the disease over the past month.

SOUTH AFRICA: HIV prevalent in mines
South Africa's deputy minerals and energy minister was reported as saying about 45 percent of miners are infected with HIV, and warned that the industry would face a severe labour shortage if the epidemic was not brought under control.

Addressing the launch of an AIDS awareness project for the mining industry, Susan Shabangu said: "We will experience a situation in which the productive population will not have the physical energy and or ability to perform their daily tasks."

ZAMBIA: British police to assist assassination probe
A team of British Scotland Yard police investigators will assist Zambian authorities in their investigation of the murder of former President Kenneth Kaunda's son, Wezi, news reports said on Monday.

A spokesman of the ministry of home affairs said the British government had agreed to help with the investigation following a request by the Kaunda family. Wezi Kaunda was shot dead outside his hom in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on 3 November. Two suspects appeared in court to face charges and have been remanded in custody.

BOTSWANA: Mogae sworn in as president
President Festus Mogae of Botswana was been sworn into office on Wednesday, following his party's victory in last Saturday's general elections.

In a televised ceremony, President Mogae told crowds at his inauguration ceremony that his government's main objective would be to fight poverty and unemployment. This will be Mogae's first full term in office. Mogae took over from Ketumile Masire, who stepped down as president last year.

MOZAMBIQUE: Four candidates to fight for the presidency
Four candidates have registered for the December presidential elections, a Mozambican electoral official was quoted by news reports as saying. They are: President Joaquim Chissano of the governing FRELIMO party, Afonso Dhlakama of the country's main opposition party Renamo, Yaqub Sibindi of the smaller Pimo party and Wehia Ripua, leader of the Mozambican Opposition Union.

ZIMBABWE: New party urges conditional aid grants only Morgan Tsvangirai, leader of a new opposition party in Zimbabwe called the Movement for Democratic Change, has urged European donor governments not to grant further aid to his country unless it is conditional on good governance and respect for human rights.

AFRICA: AIDS overtakes malaria as prime killer
More than two-thirds of the estimated 33.4 million people in the world living with HIV/AIDS are in sub-Saharan Africa, according to latest figures by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and UNAIDS.

For the first time, AIDS this year outstripped malaria as the prime source of health-related death in Africa, AFP reported. According to the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), in eastern and southern Africa, AIDS is now claiming more lives than warfare, the continent's traditional scourge.

ANGOLA: Panel begins work on enforcing sanctions
A panel of arms and finance experts have started their task of enforcing UN sanctions against the UNITA rebel movement in Angola, media reports said on Friday.

Canada's UN ambassador, Robert Fowler, who heads the sanctions committee, was quoted as saying that the group hoped to make it more difficult for UNITA leader, Jonas Savimbi, to sell diamonds so that he can buy arms and oil for his troops. "Our objective is to try to limit Savimbi's ability to make war," he said. Fowler

ANGOLA: UNITA communique claims military successes
The Angolan UNITA rebel movement said in a statement to the media at the weekend that it had killed 68 government soldiers in battles with government forces during the past week.

In a report which was not independently verified and which did not carry details of any casualties its own forces may have suffered, UNITA said it had killed 28 government soldiers when they ambushed a convoy 14 km north of the besieged central highlands city of Huambo on 20 July. The following day, it said 21 government soldiers
