ANGOLA: New humanitarian concerns amid grim fighting

After a week of intense fighting in Angola's central highlands between government forces and the opposition UNITA movement, humanitarian workers said they were concerned for an estimated 70,000 people who sought refuge in the towns of Huambo and Kuito.

JOHANNESBURG, 1 December (IRIN) - South African President Nelson Mandela pledged on Tuesday that Pretoria would work closely with neighbouring countries and the UN in the fight against AIDS.
In a speech marking World AIDS Day, Mandela disclosed new government figures showing that 1,500 people a day were being diagnosed with the disease in South Africa where the number of those infected currently tops three million.

Angola: Humanitarian community "extremely concerned"

JOHANNESBURG, 19 November 1998 (IRIN) - The humanitarian community in Angola said on Thursday it was "extremely concerned" that intensified fighting between government troops and UNITA forces in the central highlands in recent days was making it difficult to sustain relief operations.
