Since the launch of the 2012 Consolidated Appeal (CAP) at the end of last year, Zimbabwe has continued to make steady progress towards recovery and development, with the general humanitarian situation remaining stable. However, humanitarian challenges remain, including drought-induced food insecurity mainly in the south of the country and outbreaks of typhoid and other water-borne diseases such as cholera which is predominantly in urban areas.

The humanitarian crisis in Zimbabwe is increasingly taking on a regional dimension. The outbreak of cholera which started in Zimbabwe is now spreading to neighboring countries, namely Mozambique, South Africa and Botswana. According to the UN in Zimbabwe, as of 9 December, there were 13,960 suspected cases of cholera and 589 related deaths. This Emergency Appeal seeks CHF 11,409,294 (USD 10,332,633 or EUR 7,131,363) in cash, kind, or services to support the Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe National Societies to assist 30,830 households (154,150 people) for six months.

CHF 1,191,000 was allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support this operation. Unearmarked funds to replenish DREF are encouraged.

Revision No. 3 of Appeal 04/2000 consolidated the relief and rehabilitation phase of the operation, and sought CHF 19,470,410 in cash, kind, and services to assist 140,600 direct beneficiaries and 225,000 indirect beneficiaries for a period of 12 months. The total appeal budget was therefore increased to CHF 29,964,273.

Distributions planned in the emergency relief phase of the operation have, for the most part, been completed, and activities are now focused on working with the Mozambique Red Cross
