This summary note is an excerpt from the chapter on Botswana that will appear in the peer-reviewed IFPRI monograph, Southern African Agriculture and Climate Change: A Comprehensive Analysis.

The research, produced in collaboration with scientists from the countries studied, is based on scenarios from economic global climate change models, and takes into account estimates of each country’s economic and population growth. Each study includes a set of policy recommendations.

On 2-4 May 2012, the Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS) at the University of Botswana hosted a SADSEM/DCAF Security, Defence and Gender Training and Education Workshop. The workshop brought together seven Southern African Defence and Security Management (SADSEM) network institutions, DCAF and several local gender resource persons. The eighteen workshop participants initiated a process to review and adjust SADSEM’s training curriculum for their executive short courses on security and defence issues in order to ensure that it incorporates gender issues.

The index compares conditions for mothers in 165 countries around the globe, looking at factors such as mother's health, education and economic status, as well as critical child indicators such as health and nutrition.

Executive Summary

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, climate change will disproportionately affect the most vulnerable populations in the developing world. Rising temperatures, increasingly severe floods and droughts, and sea-level rise threaten economies that are reliant on agriculture, in countries whose governments lack adaptive capacity, and in areas where populations have little access to healthcare and education.

More and more Africans are growing old but face uncertain future, reports AfDB

Africa’s population is ageing, just like in the rest of the world, but the continent’s governments are badly equipped to handle the growing number of older people.

That’s the main conclusion of a new report from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The percentage of people aged over 65 in Africa has grown to 3.6 percent in 2010 from 3.3 percent in 2000.
