Flood of the century in Brazil: "Please, don't help us"

GENEVA, 19 December 2008 - In southern Brazil 1.5 million people have been affected by the worst floods in memory. In some places the rain has poured for two months and the water is nine meters above its normal level. The governor of the worst hit area said, 'Santa Catarina is facing its worst weather tragedy of its history'.

Yet the Civil Defense in the state has called upon the population to stop their donations. The warehouses and centers of distributions are filled and there is no space to receive any more. The solidarity of the Brazilian people has been enormous.

BRAZIL – FLOODING/MUDSLIDES (update)

Flooding due to heavy rains in the State of Santa Catarina has resulted in 131 deaths and 22 persons missing. Furthermore, 32,973 persons have been displaced, of which 5,737 are sheltered.

The Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate has confirmed 242 cases of Leptospirosis in 21 municipalities affected by flood.

On Tuesday, the Government stated risk of possible landslides and flooding in the cities of Florianópolis and Itajaí as a result of expected rain in the coming days.

Death toll reaches 125 in southern Brazil floods

RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec 11, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- Two weeks after one of the worst floods in Brazil's history, the death toll in the country's southern state of Santa Catarina has reached 125 and is still rising, local Civil Defense reported Thursday.

Nearly 30 people are missing in the state, while over 33,000 are left homeless, with 6,000 of them still living in churches or schools.

In the affected area, over 40 cases of leptospirosis have been confirmed, while 260 suspected cases reported, according to the state government.

Flood leaves 122 dead in southern Brazil

BRASILIA, Dec 06, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- The death toll caused by floods which hit several towns in Brazil's Santa Catarina state reached 122, the authorities said Saturday.

The Civil Defense Department of the state confirmed the death of two more people who were missing in the town of Gaspar, putting the total death toll at 122.

Most of the deaths were caused by mudslide, said the department, noting 29 others remained missing.

However, local media said the number of missing people may reach 84.

Rapid response to deadly Brazil flooding

Richard Hoffman, Country Representative for Brazil, reports on recent flooding that sent tens of thousands fleeing their homes.

In less than a week, an equivalent of four months of heavy rain saturated eastern coastal and northern sections of the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. Rivers swelled above their banks and resulting mudslides caused several fatalities as well as damaging homes and property.

Geneva, 5 December 2008. Since 21 November heavy rainfall in the state of Santa Catarina in South Brazil caused flooding and affected close to 60 cities with more than 1.5 million people. "This is the worst climatic tragedy of Santa Catarina's history", Santa Catarina's governor said.

Landslides & flooding due to torrential rains have affected the State of Santa Catarinain southern Brazilsince November.

Se han registrado serias inundaciones y derrumbes debido a las fuertes lluvias que han azotado el estado de Santa Catarina en el Sur de Brasil desde noviembre.

Se reportan 119 personas fallecidas y 31 desaparecidas. Se estima que 33,000 personas han sido desplazadas y 27,410 se encuentran refugiadas. 5 carreteras estatales permanecen obstaculizadas.

ShelterBox helps flood-hit Honduras & Cuba

As the Americas emerge from hurricane season, international disaster relief charity ShelterBox is providing aid for those displaced by a series of hurricanes in Cuba.

A ShelterBox Response Team has been working with the aid agency CARITAS to deliver ShelterBoxes to families who have lost their homes in the Pinar del Rio area of northern Cuba, which suffered hurricane winds of over 200 mph - these are the highest ever on record.
