Colombia: Border Report Sep - Oct 2003

A recent document of the Working Group on US military aid made up of CIP and WOLA shows that 13,076 of the 34,013 soldiers trained around the world are from Latin American countries, mainly Colombia, Mexico, Bolivia and Peru. The impact on democratic regimes and civilian-military relations, however, are the elements that guarantee the growth of the U.S. Economy: 2.6% in 2003 and 3.9% in 2004.

(9/6) Annual meeting of the OAS General Assembly in Santiago, Chile, with 34 countries attending, in which the central theme was democratic governance in the region and the threats to it; human rights, corruption, drug trafficking and continental security were among those that stood out the most. Colombia's foreign minister expected approval of a declaration of support promoted by Costa Rica for his country's security policy and another condemning the armed groups, but it did not come since the idea of a negotiated way out of the conflict prevailed.

USAID provides assistance for victims of flooding in Brazil

Washington, D.C. - The Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Andrew S. Natsios today announced that USAID is providing $50,000 to Servico Voluntario de Assistencia Social (SERVAS), the primary Brazilian non-governmental organization in the state of Minas Gerais, for the local purchase of relief supplies for the victims of the recent flooding in the state. The funding will be provided in response to the disaster declaration issued yesterday by U.S. Ambassador Donna Hrinak and the request for assistance from the government

Since 16 January, towns and villages in Brazil have been hit by incesssant rains that became particularly intense between 22 and 24 January. The impact of the rains is most severe in Minas Gerais within Sao Paulo, and thousands of people have been affected. According

Death toll from rains in Brazil rises to 13

Rio de Janeiro (dpa) - Five people were killed in flooding sparked by heavy rains in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, bringing the death toll up to 13, Globonews television said.
The rains led to mudslides that killed eight people in the neighbouring state of Sao Paulo on Monday and Tuesday, reports said.

In the incidents in Rio, a landslide buried a home in the city of Niteroi early Wednesday, killing a 39-year-old man and his nine-year-old daughter.

A 19-year-old woman and her two infant children aged eight months and two years were rescued alive.

World Vision responds to those affected by continuous rainfall in Brazil

As a result of continuous rainfall in Brazil, 51 people have died and many more are in dire need. Civil Defence is collecting donations of food, blankets and clothes for affected families.

World Vision Brazil Rapid Response Team has visited many affected families who have sponsored children.

World Vision has also started several donation campaigns. About 9 posts to collect donations have been distributed around the metropolitan area, where volunteers are helping to separate the donations and to organize aid to the families.
