Major Food Donation to the Palestinians from Brazil

Brazil’s major rice producing state, Rio Grande do Sul, through the Federal Government of Brazil, has donated 11.500 metric tons of rice stocks to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The announcement was made in Jerusalem’s Shufa’at refugee camp today by Rio Grande do Sul Governor, Tarso Genro. “I am delighted to be here among the Palestinian refugees who will benefit from this food produced in my state.

According to the Ministry of Health, 132 deaths have been registered as a result of dengue in Brazil during the first trimester of 2013. Active dengue cases have increased by approximately 279% compared to the same period in 2012.

During the first three months of this year, 635.161 infected people have been registered, of which 1.417 are considered severe cases, as per the latest report issued by the Ministry of Health.

Death toll in Brazil landslides rises to 31

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 21, 2013 (AFP) - Three bodies were found in eastern Brazil Thursday, bringing to 31 the death toll from landslides caused by heavy rains that lashed a rugged area of Rio de Janeiro state, authorities said.

Petropolis Mayor Rubens Bontempo told a press conference late Wednesday that the heavy downpour late Sunday and Monday caused $60 million in damage.

Brazil landslides claim at least 27 lives

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 20, 2013 (AFP) - At least 27 people were killed by landslides caused by heavy rains in a mountainous area of the Brazilian sate of Rio de Janeiro, authorities said Tuesday.

The heavy downpour also forced 1,466 people to leave their homes or left them homeless. The deluge began late Sunday in and around Petropolis, located 68 kilometers (42 miles) north of Rio de Janeiro, officials said.

The bodies of two boys and a girl who had been unaccounted for were found Tuesday in a stream, firefighters said.

Heavy rains leave 13 dead in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro, March 18, 2013 (AFP) - Landslides triggered by heavy rains have killed 13 people over the past 24 hours in the Brazilian tourist town of Petropolis, an official said Monday.

"We are in a state of maximum alert," Rio state governor Sergio Cabral told a news conference in Petropolis, a former imperial capital located 68 kilometers (42 miles) north of Rio de Janeiro, as he updated the death toll from 10.

More than half of that went to relief efforts in Somalia,” said Ms. Amos.
