 This Emergency Appeal was launched on 14 March 2012 for 503,659 Swiss francs to assist 2,000 families (10,000 beneficiaries) for 6 months.

 Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF): 116,138 Swiss francs were initially allocated from the Federation’s DREF to support the Bolivian Red Cross (BRC) to respond.

Food security levels are generally better than a year earlier in East Africa and the Sahel, with most areas facing either IPC phase 1 ‘minimal’ or phase 2 ‘stressed’ conditions, thanks to favorable agro-climatic conditions in 2012.

Global Highlights

• The global cereal price index increased by 8.8% on a year-on-year basis in the January-March 2013 quarter.This increase is driven by increases in real prices of maize and wheat (+8% and +13%, respectively).

Created to promote relief work in times of peace, the Empress Shôken Fund received many applications this year from Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies and is pleased to announce its support for five Red Cross Red Crescent projects around the world which address local vulnerabilities, namely in Belarus, Bolivia, Eritrea, Iran, and Kiribati. The total amount of the grant allocations is 98,779 Swiss Francs.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• ARGENTINA: 350,000 people affected in Buenos Aires and La Plata. 100,000 houses damaged.
• BOLIVIA: 300 families affected and 400 hectares of crops damaged by rains in the department of Beni.
• PERU: 176,643 people affected by the rainy season since October 2012.
