Period covered by this Ops Update: March to October 2011. This update represents an eight-month summary of the operation (cumulative narrative and financial).

Appeal target (current): 518,725 Swiss francs;

Summary: The Bolivian Red Cross has reached 2,359 families with hygiene kits and 1,759 families with food parcels. One hundred families have been assisted with shelter, with 50 families initially being supported with communal space and sanitary services and 50 families receiving housing in temporary shelter modules.

This Emergency Appeal seeks 518,725 Swiss francs in cash, kind, or services to support the Bolivian Red Cross to assist 2,500 beneficiaries for 6 months, and will be completed by the end of August 2011. A Final report will be made available by 1 December 2011 (three months after the end of the operation).

On 3 March, 78,074 Swiss francs were allocated from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support this operation. Un-earmarked funds to replenish DREF are encouraged.

Executive summary

On 24 January 2008, the Bolivian Government declared a state of National Emergency as a consequence to the constant and heavy rains produced by the 'La Niña' phenomenon and resulting flooding in the nine departments of Bolivia. The bad weather conditions began in December 2007, and reached a peak in January 2008. On 12 February, the President of Bolivia, Evo Morales, declared a State of National Disaster, asking for international humanitarian assistance.

Unprecedented heavy rains lashed Bolivia in January and February 2006. In the highlands alone rainfall has been nearly three times the annual average. Consequently the highlands and the Amazon River basin were severely flooded, causing serious damage to houses, crops, roads and other basic infrastructure. Rural families, who rely mainly on subsistence farming, were badly affected.

Drought threatens thousands of families in Bolivia, Guatemala and Honduras

PANAMA - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) launched an international appeal today for US$1 million to fund a six-month emergency food aid operation in Bolivia, where prolonged drought has seriously affected at least 41,000 people.
Bolivia is one of several Latin American countries still reeling from the effects of freak weather patterns which have brought severe drought, floods and even snow storms. Together they have wreaked havoc on the livelihoods of the region's poor.
