In West Africa, millions of children don’t complete elementary school. Some have never been to school. Handicap International estimates that a third of these children have a disability. Our inclusive education program, which runs in nine West African countries, aims to ensure that all children have the opportunity to learn, play, and make friends at school and feel valued in their communities.

Recognizing that Africa is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, the World Meteorological Organization has launched the Training Programme on Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in Agriculture to improve the capacity of national technical services in West African countries. The programme seeks to reduce the impacts of natural disasters and climate change on the agricultural sector and to support sustainable development.

An outbreak of Lassa fever that poses a risk to nearly a million people in northern Togo has become the focus of the 100th crisis response financed by the Start Fund.

Schoolchildren will play a key role in a project run by Plan International which aims to raise people’s awareness of the potentially deadly virus and encourage them to react quickly to the appearance of its symptoms. They will be taught what to look out for and precautions that can prevent the disease spreading, and urged to share the knowledge with their families and communities.

The International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital will work in partnership with Burkina Faso’s Ministry of Health to implement the Maternal and Neonatal Health Care Improvement Project in order to enhance the institutional capacity of medical care units and to improve the quality of maternal and neonatal health care by using Taiwan’s advantages in the public health and medical field. This project is expected to start in April 2017.
