Benin: Poor storage threatens cereal harvest

COTONOU, 24 December 2009 (IRIN) - Benin's cereal production is expected to be 45 percent higher than last year, but poor storage ruins an estimated 40 percent of the annual harvest, according to UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

"The same effort we are putting into production is not going into conservation," said Benin's FAO representative, Jean Prosper Koyo. "It is not enough to just produce, but the surplus needs to be stockpiled."

He added: "Storage is important so that products can be processed here. We cannot export all of the raw

The IDB approves US$ 504 million for new development projects

Jeddah,14.12.2009: The Board of Executive Directors of the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), which concluded its 263rd session at IDB Headquarters in Jeddah, approved new finances totaling US$ (504) million for development projects and technical assistance in favor of Benin, Kyrgyz, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Lebanon, Nigeria, Uganda, Bangladesh, Iran and Uzbekistan. Brussels, 15 December 2009 - The European Commission approved the first financing decisions in favour of eleven African and two Caribbean countries for a total of € 230 million, including € 215 million under the so-called Vulnerability FLEX mechanism (V-FLEX). This is the first package of financing decisions in the framework of the € 500 million V-FLEX mechanism which was adopted in August 2009 as a response to the economic crisis for African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries (ACP).

JOHANNESBURG, 6 December 2009 (IRIN) - Money to help the world's 49 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) - the poorest and most vulnerable - cope with the impact of climate change will be in the spotlight when the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen (COP15) kicks off on 7 December.

The Least Developed Countries Fund (LDCF) was set up in 2001 under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to help them address their "urgent and immediate" adaptation needs.

West Africa launches 368-million dollar appeal for life-saving assistance

(Dakar/New York, 4 December 2009): West Africa's humanitarian actors launched today an appeal for US$368 million (160 billion CFA) in order to respond to the humanitarian needs of millions of vulnerable people in 2010.

This appeal would contribute in saving lives throughout the 15 countries that make up the Economic Community of West African States and Mauritania by financing projects in life-saving sectors such food security and nutrition, health, water and hygiene, and protection.

Dec 1 (Reuters) - Since the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, almost 60 million people have been infected with HIV and 25 million people have died of HIV-related causes.

As World Aids Day is marked on Tuesday, globally some 33.4 million people were living with HIV. There were 2 million AIDS-related deaths in 2008 according to UNAIDS.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most heavily affected, accounting for 67 percent of all people living with HIV and 91 percent of all new infections among children.

DAKAR, 24 novembre 2009 (IRIN) - La première campagne multi-pays de vaccination contre la fièvre jaune dans le monde a débuté le 23 novembre, avec 12 millions de personnes ciblées au Bénin, au Liberia et en Sierra Leone. West Africa: Yellow fever vaccine push amid shortages, resurgence

DAKAR, 23 November 2009 (IRIN) - The world's first multi-country yellow fever vaccination campaign began on 23 November, with 12 million people targeted across Benin, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The push comes as the killer mosquito-borne disease is resurging in some sub-Saharan African countries and vaccine stocks are running low.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says 160 million Africans are at risk if further funding is not secured, as the current vaccine stockpile is expected to run out in 2010.
