The United States has spent more than a billion dollars in the past dozen years on humanitarian land mine removal efforts around the world.

This money has been spent to remove land mines, pay for educational messages on the risks posed by mines, help victims of mine injuries, and fund research and development to improve existing humanitarian mine removal programs.

Benin-Togo: Some refugees return, but 19,000 remain

COME, 14 December (IRIN) - While some of the refugees who streamed across the border from Togo into Benin by the thousands last April have finally gone home, more than 19,000 are still in exile, according to the UN refugee agency.

The UNHCR, which is updating data on the refugee situation in Benin, said 10,960 people were registered in its Come and Agame refugee camps, while 8,130 refugees from this year's eruption of political tension in Togo were living in the capital Cotonou, or elsewhere in the country.

Benin-Togo : Des milliers de réfugiés togolais vivent encore en exil

COME, le 14 décembre (IRIN) - De nombreux de réfugiés togolais qui s'étaient installés au Bénin en avril dernier sont finalement rentrés chez eux, mais plus de 19 000 vivent encore en exil, selon le Haut Commissariat des Nations unies pour les réfugiés (HCR).

Faisant le point sur la situation des réfugiés au Bénin, le HCR a indiqué que 10 960 personnes vivent actuellement dans ses camps de réfugiés de Comé et d'Agame, et 8 130 autres sont à Cotonou, la capitale, ou dans les autres centres urbains du pays.

Benin: Measles initiative readies for latest african vaccination campaign

Thursday, December 08, 2005 - The American Red Cross and its partners in the Measles Initiative partners are planning another major measles vaccination campaign for Africa, this time in the western country of Benin during the week of Dec. 12.

In Benin, the Measles Initiative will support the country's efforts toward vaccinating 1.3 million children, which will ultimately save nearly 2,000 lives. Children also will be given mebendazole, a de-worming medicine and vitamin A to boost immune systems.

Benin-Ghana-Togo: Food running out for Togolese refugees

DAKAR, 16 November (IRIN) - Over 65,000 people forced to flee Togo or seek shelter from political violence elsewhere in the country will stop receiving essential food aid unless the World Food Programme secures just US $1 million from donors by the end of the year.

The UN food agency warned in a statement that unless funds can be found, imminent food shortages could lead to unrest.

Thousands of Togo refugees will run out of food - UN

GENEVA, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Some 65,000 Togo refugees will run out of food by the end of the year unless the international community quickly comes up with $1 million in aid, the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) said on Tuesday.
An abrupt end to aid would spark unrest in refugee camps in neighbouring Benin and Ghana and stoke tensions between refugees and local people, it said.

"These people have virtually nothing and the world is in danger of ignoring their most basic needs," said WFP regional director for West Africa Mustapha Darboe.
