West Africa: Food security prospects mixed

ABIDJAN, 3 December (IRIN) - Food security prospects in West Africa as at November 2002, were varied with a mixed performance recorded in the cereal harvest in the Sahel sub-region, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reported on Friday.
Below average food harvests were anticipated in Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and Mauritania, while near average production was expected in Chad, the Gambia, Mali and Senegal. Above-average outputs were foreseen in Burkina Faso and Niger, FAO said.

GHANA: State of emergency extended in northern district

Ghana's parliament on Monday approved a four-week extension of a state of emergency - including a curfew from 21:00 to 05:00 (local time/GMT) - in a northern area whose king and 29 other people were killed in March. West Africa: US pledges training assistance to ECOMOG

LAGOS, 30 July (IRIN) - The United States has promised to help train the Economic Community of West African States' (ECOWAS) regional peace-keeping force, ECOMOG. It has also said it would help ECOWAS set up military bases for the rapid deployment of troops in conflict areas.
ECOWAS said in a statement on Monday that Gen Carlton Fulford, deputy commander of the US European Command, made the pledges during a visit on Saturday to its secretariat in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

LIBERIA: Country poised for humanitarian disaster, WFP official says

UNHCR to expand sports programmes for refugee children

GENEVA -- UNHCR is expanding sports programmes for children living in refugee camps around the world to a total of 16 countries by the end of this year. New projects will be funded by three of UNHCR's main sports donors and will focus mainly on Asia and Africa.
