The Disaster
During the month of October severe flooding in Benin affected populations bordering several major rivers in the south and north of the country, resulting in both human loss and material damage. The initial emergency response and assistance was relatively slow, in large measure because of the very limited resources available. The Benin Red Cross (BRCS) has now, however, been able to formulate and implement its plan of action.

BENIN: At least 1.43 million people to die of AIDS by 2025

The World Health Organisation estimates 15,000 people have already died of AIDS in Benin, according to a report received by IRIN today (Tuesday) and a separate national report estimates at least 1.43 million people will have died by the year 2025.

The Disaster
Though the rainy season is drawing to an end in Benin, torrential rains fell in the northern regions of Atacora and Borgou as well as in the south-west of the country in Mono, affecting 8 localities. Shelter, crops and means of communication were washed away by 250 millimetres of rain which fell over a few days. Eight persons drowned as well as many small livestock. Part of the rural and urban populations lost their housing or their food stores. Fields of millet, maize and cotton, almost ready for harvest, suffered serious damage. The cereal shortfall

1. Two Northern Departments, Borgou and Atacora, are suffering from severe flood conditions since August. WFP-Benin, coordinating agency for humanitarian operations, reports that according to yet unconfirmed information thousands of houses have been destroyed leaving more than 20,000 people homeless. Inundation of cultivated land will significantly reduce the harvest. Official estimates put the losses at 20,000 tons of cereal.
