Dakar, 16 mai (HCR) – Abdoulaye Ndongo, âgé de 37 ans, est arrivé au Sénégal en 1989. Il avait 13 ans. Il se rappelle encore ce jour d'été, où il a été déporté de Mauritanie pour le Sénégal avec seulement les vêtements qu'il portait ce jour-là. Toutefois, Ndongo a eu la chance de traverser le fleuve Sénégal sans être séparé de ses parents, ce qui n'a pas été le cas pour beaucoup d'autres enfants réfugiés.

A delegation from PepsiCo Quaker in the Netherlands recently travelled to Benin to visit WFP’s school feeding programme, which the company is supporting. The visit demonstrated the impact that PepsiCo Quaker’s contributions have had on primary schools in Benin.

During the month of May, IMPACT will be highlighting USAID’s work in Global Health. From May 11-17, we will be featuring the important role of mothers and partnerships in Global Health.

West Africa is characterized by a considerable population mobility, most especially of the young. Many of them quit their home villages for the big cities or even neighbouring countries, seeking better economic perspectives for themselves and their families. However, most often these children find themselves faced with exploitation and abuse. Terre des hommes has decided to tackle the problem head on by launching an important project whose aim is to offer these unaccompanied migrant youngsters a truly protective environment.

• In Benin, community conservation areas have been established to preserve the biological diversity of coastal wetlands

• Investments have been made to enable communities to conduct environmentally-friendly business activities

• To date, 1,601 Beninese have benefited from the Community-Based Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Management Project

In parts of West Africa, the Peace Corps is expanding opportunities for its Volunteers to receive training in combating hunger and undernutrition.

Peace Corps Volunteers are closely integrated with the communities they serve, often supporting local community health workers or even providing counseling themselves to caregivers responsible for the health and nutrition of family members.

The Higher Committee of Foreign aid at the Red Crescent Authority has allocated Dh 4.027 million to carry out developmental projects in a number of countries.

The assistance will cover health, education and social services sectors in addition to the provision of water supplies in areas which suffer from shortage of this vital service.

These projects will be carried out in a number of countries, including Palestine, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Jordan and Pakistan, Senegal, Bosnia, Uganda, Benin, Thailand, Chad, in addition to Ghana, Lebanon, Libya and Mauritania.

ECOWAS and its partners have achieved another milestone in their stride towards the elimination of malaria in the region with the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a biolarvicides factory in Port Harcourt, capital of Nigeria’s south eastern Rivers State.

The President of the ECOWAS Commission His Excellency Kadré Désiré Ouédraogo and Nigeria’s Minister of Health Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, who represented President His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, unveiled the plaque at a well-attended ceremony on Thursday 11th April 2013.

UN Women calls for greater participation of women to achieve peace in Sahel and urge world leaders to protect and advance women’s rights

“In Mali as well as in the Sahel, women are among the most affected by the crisis. They are also those with the strongest understanding of conflict dynamics. But yet, we remain confined at home and excluded from decision-making,” said Aiziza Mint Kadra, former Deputy Mayor of the historical city of Timbuktu in Mali as she shared her story with regional and international experts.
