Benin Floods Response: Niger Area Transport Assessments on 23-26 Nov 2010

Context

Low lying areas along the Niger River which marks Benin's North-Western border, have been severely affected by recent flooding. The Logistics Cluster team conducted a transport assessment collecting information on affected areas.

Existing maps are not sufficient guides, as villages are located or named incorrectly and information on roads and tracks is patchy.

The assessment was conducted in villages throughout Malanville. Some of the areas were completely cut off during the floods and others were partially inaccessible.

Responding to the food crisis: Synthesis of medium-term measures proposed in inter-agency assessments

Executive summary

The food crisis of 2008 provoked a strong coordinated response from the world community and exposed fundamental problems in the agrofood sector, which continue. Prices remain high in many domestic markets of developing countries, and the risk of future volatility persists. The present economy-wide crisis creates severe economic and social difficulties, which aggravate agricultural problems and the food situation -particularly for least-developed countries and small farmers - and which require stronger

Africa: Human rights "commissions" have little effect; state-sponsored bodies often silent on abuses

(New York, February 22, 2001) -- A rapid growth in government-sponsored human rights commissions across Africa has not generally led to better human rights protection, Human Rights Watch charged in a major new study released today.
Half the countries in Africa now have such commissions, while only one country (Togo)did in 1989. However, many of the commissions appear designed to deflect international criticism of human rights abuses rather than to address the abuses themselves. The commissions in Ghana, South Africa and Uganda, however, are exceptions to the general trend.
