Donor conference for Mali: Belgium commits to providing EUR 31.5 million for 2013 and 2014

In the context of the donor conference for Mali taking place in Brussels today, Minister for Development Cooperation Jean-Pascal Labille stated that Belgium would actively support the recovery process in Mali. To this end, Belgium will provide a financial contribution of EUR 17.3 million in 2013 and EUR 14.2 million in 2014.

For Jean-Pascal Labille, this support illustrates our country’s solidarity with the Malian people, who are currently experiencing a very dark time in their country’s history.

The Rwanda government will cut spending in some areas and revise its budget as it comes to terms with shrinking funding after key donors withheld aid over claims the country is supporting M23 rebels in eastern DRC.

European Union and Belgium contribute €9.8 million to support Palestinian families living in extreme poverty in the West Bank and Gaza

The European Union and the Government of the Kingdom of Belgium are joining forces to make this year's third contribution to the Palestinian Authority's quarterly payment of social allowances to poor Palestinian families in the West Bank and Gaza. The contribution, channelled through PEGASE[1], amounts to €9.8 million, including €9 million from the Government of Belgium and €0.8 million from the European Union.

Aide aux réfugiés de République Centrafricaine en RDC

Le gouvernement belge vient de répondre favorablement à une sollicitation de la Croix-Rouge de Belgique et a alloué 25.000€ pour aider la Croix-Rouge de la République Démocratique du Congo (RDC) à apporter une aide humanitaire d’urgence à plus de 1700 personnes qui fuient les conflits au Sud de la République Centrafricaine et ont traversé la frontière pour gagner la RDC. Le Fonds de Secours d’Urgence aux Catastrophes (Dref : Disaster Relief Emergency Fund) de la fédération internationale de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge, a au total alloué 109.000€ pour cette opération d’urgence.

  • An overwhelming majority of Iraqi refugees 91.6% of refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Syria are from Iraq. The Government of Syria, which has continuously implemented a generous policy towards the stay of Iraqi refugees, estimates that the country hosts about one million Iraqis. 64.6% come from the region of Baghdad alone and 62.4% sought refuge in Syria five or more years ago. 35% of the 27,681 families registered are female-headed households.

May 5, 2012 - President Hamid Karzai met on Saturday with Mr. Didier Reynders, the deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belgium.

Deputy PM Reynders, leading a delegation to Kabul briefed the President on his visit to troops serving in Kunduz, Kandahar and Kabul.

President Karzai thanked Belgium for all the assistance it has made to Afghanistan over the past eleven years and hoped the bilateral cooperation can further be expanded.

EU turning a blind eye to development with drastic cuts to aid

Almost all European countries are making cuts in their aid programmes to the developing world, according to new figures released today by the OECD.

For the first time since the start of the financial crisis, 12 EU countries have slashed their aid budgets. The biggest cuts were in Spain (-32.7%) and Greece (-39.3%), with substantial decreases in Belgium (-13.3%) and Austria (-14.3%).

First global aid cut in 14 years will cost lives - Oxfam

Hundreds of thousands of poor people will go without life-saving medicines and many more children will miss out on school because of the first cuts in global aid since 1997, Oxfam warned today as the OECD published its annual report showing how much donors give to poor countries.

Oxfam said the figures showed the importance of the UK sticking to its commitment to meet the target of giving 0.7 per cent of national income in aid next year. The OECD’s figures show a surprise fall in UK aid of $100m in real terms or 0.8 per cent between 2010-11.

Following the explosion of a munitions depot in Brazzaville, resulting in numerous victims, and at the request of the Republic of the Congo, Belgium has decided today to send emergency aid to the country.

Yesterday, the B-Fast planning committee convened to investigate what sort of aid could be offered as well as to draw up a preparatory schedule once the Republic of the Congo made their request for emergency aid.

Belgian aid for the floods in Tanzania

The Belgian Development Cooperation has granted EUR 49,500 to assist the Tanzanian Red Cross in bringing emergency aid to the victims of the floods that are affecting the country. Flooding in the city of Dar Es Salaam has caused 20 deaths. Over 200 people have been injured and some 10,000 others, i.e. 2,000 families, have had to be evacuated.
