La Croix-Rouge du Burundi a procédé, ce mercredi 08 février 2017, au lancement des travaux de réhabilitation et d'extension d'une adduction d'eau potable de 35 km dans les communes Gahombo et Muhanga de la province Kayanza. Ces travaux seront réalisés à hauteur de 105 mille dollars américains grâce à l'appui du Gouvernement Japonais. Cette infrastructure desservira en eau potable à 29.000 personnes de la population locale et 70.000 personnes qui utilisent les centres de santé, écoles et marchés de ces communes.

Ugandan will send home at least 46,000 refugees from Burundi following a request from its government. Burundian officials maintain that the country is now safe after months of civil unrest.

Uganda is home to over 45,000 Burundian refugees, many of who live in the Nakivale Camp in the western Ugandan District of Isingiro. Over 200,000 Burundians have fled the country after violence broke out in protest of President Pierre Nkurunziza’s re-election in 2015.

The current Burundi refugee situation in Tanzania began late April 2015. The months that followed saw significantly high number of persons of concern arrivng in Tanzania, mainly through Kagunga, a tiny border village along Lake Tanganyika and other entry points in Kigoma region. The population was relocated to Nyarugusu camp, which was already host to 65,000 persons of concern, mainly DR Congolese. The camp quickly ran out of capacity to host the new population, prompting the opening of a new camp, Nduta, in Kibondo district on 07-Oct-2015. Nduta's capacity has been put at 50,000.

  • 553 nouveaux demandeurs d’asile ont été enregistrés. Parmi lesquels 518 sont des Congolais (RDC), 8 maliens , 26 rwandais et 1 somalien.

  • 331 réfugiés ont été transférés vers le camp de Kavumu

  • 70 réfugiés ont bénéficié du programme de réinstallation.

YAOUNDE, 13 February 2017 – Collective action by regional organisations is a key means to help countries reduce their risk of disasters, and the Economic Community of Central African States is stepping up its efforts to rein in the impact of hazards amid rising pressure from climate change.

The ECCAS secretariat, plus its 11 member states and partners have together set out a disaster risk management and climate change action plan to be implemented over the course of this year.
