HEALTH SITUATION

Health indicators in Burundi continue to feature among the worst in the world. Malaria remains one of the main public health concerns, with a mortality rate of 47% among children under five. Maternal mortality is as high as 855 deaths per 100 000 live births. Moreover, cholera and meningitis epidemics occur within regular intervals with thousands of cases to be confirmed and treated. Burundi truce commission to start work next month: officials

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 24, 2006 (AFP) - The commission to oversee a truce deal between the Burundian government and the country's last active rebel group,the Forces for National Liberation (FNL), will start operations next month, officials said Sunday.

The much-delayed Joint Verification and Monitoring Committee is scheduled to travel to the tiny central African nation next month to start its work, said Joram Biswaro, the head of the African department in the Tanzanian foreign ministry.

Update on Burundians Expelled from Tanzania: On 21st December, WFP, OCHA, Burundian Red Cross Society and the Governmental project for reintegration of war-affected persons (PARESI) met to discuss improvement of food aid distribution to expelled Burundians at Kinazi transit site and harmonization of statistics. From 11 to 22 December, PARESI reported 975 persons registered at Kinazi transit site. Since May till 26 December 2006, PARESI registered a total of 5,847 persons expelled from Tanzania.

Burundi: Letter dated 18 Dec 2006 from the UN SG addressed to the President of the Security Council (S/2006/1020)

I have the honour to refer to Security Council resolution 1719 (2006) dated 25 October 2006, by which the Council authorized the establishment of the United Nations Integrated Office in Burundi (BINUB) for an initial period of 12 months, as of 1 January 2007. In that resolution, the Security Council welcomed my recommendation that BINUB be headed by an Executive Representative of the Secretary-General, who would also serve as the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme and as the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator.

With the signing of the Nairobi pact this Friday December 15 2006 by DRC, Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia, it paves the way for security, stability and development in the region, after years of conflict.

Many African state leaders, including DRC president Joseph Kabila were in Nairobi Kenya for the two day summit that will go a long way to bringing the region out of the vicious cycle of humanitarian disaster, poverty, and repeated conflict.

Mother and Child Health Week: Organized by the Ministry of Public Health with the support of UNICEF and WHO, the 2006 Mother and Child Health week was launched on 12 December at GATETE in Rumonge commune, Bururi province.
