East African leaders worry over food shortages

NAIROBI, Jan 1 (Reuters) - East African leaders said on Sunday that millions of people in the region faced hunger because poor rains had affected vital crops and pasture, giving their New Year messages a sombre tone.

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki said a famine facing the region's biggest economy was a national disaster and at least 10 percent of the country's 32 million people would need foreign and local food aid.

"In the next six months, up to 2.5 million people will be in need of famine relief," Kibaki told guests

First group of United Nations peacekeepers leave Burundi

BUJUMBURA, Dec 31 (AFP) - A first group of United Nation peacekeepers from Mozambique left Burundi Saturday as part of a phased withdrawal of troops that will end in December next year, officials said.

Some 170 soldiers left Bujumbura airport at 10:45 am (0845 GMT) for Maputo in accordance with plans between the UN Operation in Burundi (ONUB) and the new Bujumbura government that came to power in August.

NGARA, 30 December (IRIN) - On a routine repatriation day in the Ngara District of northwestern Tanzania, convoys organised by the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, lined up to take Burundi refugees home.

An 11-year-old boy stood crying next to one of the trucks. Momentarily, there was a flurry of activity as UNHCR officials tried to verify that the boy had not been left behind. He had not. Still crying, the boy explained that he was sad because his "family"

Burundi: ONUB sponsors eleven new projects

Bujumbura, Burundi - The ONUB QIPs Selection Committee recently endorsed funding for 11 projects covering 8 provinces of Burundi. Ten of these projects shall be carried out in the education sector.

The sum of Fbu 13,598,375 is to be used to rehabilitate the Nyunzwe primary school, Marangara commune, situated in Ngozi province. Three classrooms shall be renovated and new toilets built. Work shall be supervised by the "Association d'Entraide pour le Développement Communautaire" (AEDC).

NAIROBI, le 22 décembre (IRIN) - Le Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies a prorogé mercredi le mandat de l'Opération des Nations unies au Burundi (ONUB) jusqu'au 1e juillet 2006, et indiqué qu'un désengagement total de la Mission pourrait être envisageable à compter de cette date.
« A la demande du gouvernement, le retrait des forces de l'ONUB pourrait être achevé dans la deuxième moitié de 2006 », indique un article relatif à la résolution S/2005/810 du Conseil de sécurité et publié par UN News.

Health:

On 17 November first reported a cholera outbreak in Rugombo commune (Cibitoke province). At the end of the reporting week the total number of cases reported since the outbreak climbed to 73 and 3 deaths. WHO was supporting the Ministry of Health (Cellule de la Lutte contre les Maladies Transmissibles et Carentielles) in its intervention. The cholera outbreaks in Rumobge commune (Bururi province) and Nyanza-Lac commune (Makamba province) have been brought under control.

The rise in Malaria cases continued.

United Nations launches new standards for disarmament, demobilization, reintegration of ex-combatants

With decades of experience in disarming, demobilizing and reintegrating ex-combatants, including some 400,000 over the past five years alone, the United Nations today launched a new set of standards aimed at improving the process, which is considered essential to restoring stability to war-ravaged countries.

WFP welcomes Japan's aid package for Africa to build peace with food aid

YOKOHAMA - The United Nations World Food Programme today welcomed an aid package totalling JPY 940 million (US$7.9 million) from the Japanese Government to assist millions of people affected by conflict and natural disasters in a total of five countries in Africa.

The money will be spent to buy rice, wheat, and corn-soya blend. The food will support people living in the transition from conflict to peace in Burundi, Rwanda, Tanzania, Sierra Leone and the Republic of Congo. It will also reach refugees, internally displaced people, returnees and vulnerable women, children and the elderly.

Burundi: Demonstration ends in front of UNHCR headquarters

BUJUMBURA, 16 Dec 2005 (IRIN) - Some 150 refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) ended a sit-in on Friday in front of the headquarters of the UN refugees agency in Burundi, UNHCR.

However, they vowed to continue their demands for aid from the agency while refusing to go to designated refugee camps.

"We fear we may be killed [at the camps] just as Congolese Tustis were killed in Gatumba," Bernard Amegiindra-Gere, a representative of the refugee, told IRIN.

Food aid to the African countries through the World Food Programme

1. The Government of Japan has decided to extend food aid totaling 940 million yen (approximately US$7.9 million) through the World Food Programme (WFP) to refugees and internally displaced persons of countries facing a serious food crisis in a transitional stage from conflict to peace, such as Burundi and Rwanda in the Great Lakes region, and also Sierra Leone. Notes to this effect were exchanged on December 16 (Fri) in Rome between Mr. Nozomu Takaoka, Japanese Chargé d'Affaires ad interim to Italy, and Ms. Sheila Sisulu, Deputy Executive Director of the WFP.
