The Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) supports the ongoing peace process in Burundi as out-lined in the Arusha Peace and Reconciliation Agreement (APRA) by strengthening local capacities to benefit from and contribute to the peace process. WFP gets donation for feeding refugees in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 23, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) - The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) on Thursday received six million US dollars urgently-required funds to assist refugees now living in western Tanzania.

The money came from a British government donation in the amount of 3 million pounds or 6 billion Tanzanian shillings (6 million US dollars).

"The contribution from the United Kingdom comes at a critical time allowing us to purchase food desperately needed in the region, " said Patrick Buckley, the WFP representative and country director, in his statement.

South Africa's Zuma meets Burundi rebel leaders

PRETORIA, Dec 23 (AFP) - South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma held talks with Hutu leaders from Burundi on Thursday to try to iron out problems in preparations for free and fair elections next year, his office said.
Zuma, mediator in the Burundi conflict, met with Jean Minani, president of the Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU), and Pierre Nkurunziza, head of the former rebel Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD), in the eastern port city of Durban.

South Africa's Zuma to hold talks with Burundi leaders to resolve crisis

PRETORIA, Dec 22 (AFP) - South African Deputy President and mediator Jacob Zuma will Thursday begin talks with two key Hutu leaders from Burundi to discuss problems related to the constitution and a planned referendum aimed at buttressing the peace process, an official said.

Burundi: Maternity services suspended in private health centres

BUJUMBURA, 22 Dec 2004 (IRIN) - Burundi's Ministry of Health says it has suspended maternity services in private health-care centres following patients' complaints of bad treatment.

"We have found out that all is a matter of money at the cost of people's lives," Dr Jean Kamana, the minister for public health, said on Wednesday, one day after he visited some of the private health centres in the capital, Bujumbura.

Burundi: Thousands of IDPs return home

BUJUMBURA, 21 December (IRIN) - An estimated 27,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their homes in rural areas around Burundi's capital, Bujumbura, since Saturday, a development that local administrators attributed to improved security in the province.

"The people have been voluntarily asking to return," Félicien Ntahombaye, the administrator of the commune of Kabezi, told IRIN. "They have been going to work in their farms, finding each time that security was improving."

Burundi: UN peacekeepers suspended for sexual misconduct

NAIROBI, 20 December (IRIN) - Two soldiers serving with the UN peacekeeping operation in Burundi, known as ONUB, have been suspended from duty while they are officially investigated for allegations of sexual misconduct.

"This mission will not waver from its responsibility to the Burundian people and international community to ensure absolute implementation of the UN Secretary-General's zero tolerance for sexual exploitation and abuse by UN personnel," ONUB said in a statement on Friday.
