One dead in attack blamed on Hutu rebels in Burundi capital

BUJUMBURA, Jan 1 (AFP) - A civilian was killed overnight in heavy fighting following an attack blamed on Hutu rebels in Bujumbura that also left three civilians and four soldiers wounded, military and civilian officials said Thursday.
"The FNL (National Liberation Forces) attacked a military position north of Bujumbura. ... There was one civilian killed, three others and four soldiers were wounded," General Juvenal Niyoyunguruza, a commander in western Burundi, told AFP.

Ex-rebels to join Burundi's army brass next week: president

BUJUMBURA, Jan 1 (AFP) - Burundian President Domitien Ndayizeye said in his New Year's message to the nation late Wednesday that a post-war armed forces chief of staff integrating former rebels would be formed by next week.
The former rebel movement, the Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD), welcomed the move Thursday as a "crucial step" in the creation of new armed forces.

In the televised message, Ndayizeye said former rebel fighters in Burundi's 10-year civil war must be cantoned by January 5 and the new army leadership made up of 40 percent former rebels

Italy gives 350,000 euros to African peacekeeping force in Burundi

ADDIS ABABA, Dec 31 (AFP) - The Italian government has donated another 350,000 euros (437,500 dollars) to fund the African Union's (AU) peacekeeping force in Burundi, bringing Rome's contribution to the mission to 550,000 euros, the Addis Ababa-based pan-African body said Wednesday.
Italy had several months ago contributed 200,000 euros (250,000 dollars) to the peace mission in Burundi, the AU said in a statement.

The AU force in Burundi, which has soldiers from South Africa, Ethiopia and Mozambique, has been experiencing funding problems.

Six killed in Burundi capital, residents blame army

BUJUMBURA, Dec 30 (AFP) - Six people were fatally shot and another wounded at dawn Tuesday south of Burundi's capital Bujumbura, local government sources said, as residents said government soldiers had carried out the killings.
The six died in what police said were "clashes" between the army and rebels of the National Liberation Forces (FNL) in a rural district overlooking the city.

But a local government official said "there were no clashes in this area."

Burundi: Assassination of Apostolic Nuncio blamed on FNL/Palipehutu

BUJUMBURA, 30 December (IRIN) - The Burundian president, Domitien Ndayizeye, has blamed the killing on Monday of Apostolic Nuncio Michael Courtney on a faction of the Forces nationales de liberation (FNL/Palipehutu), the only rebel group not to have signed up to the peace process in Burundi. The rebels have denied responsibility.
Courtney died in the hands of a team of surgeons, including the minister of health, at Prince Louis Rwagasore hospital in the capital, Bujumbura, where he was admitted late on Monday afternoon after his car was ambushed at Shanga, near the town of Minago

BUJUMBURA, le 30 décembre (IRIN) - Près de 160 anciens combattants burundais ont été rapatriés dimanche de la République démocratique du Congo (RDC) via le site de transit de Gatumba du côté burundais de la frontière. Ils ont été escortés depuis Bukavu, une ville de l'est de la RDC, par des soldats de maintien de la paix uruguayens appartenant à la MONUC, mission des Nations Unies en RDC.

The Federal Foreign Office supported more than 300 humanitarian aid projects all over the world in 2003

The Federal Foreign Office supported 307 projects for humanitarian aid, humanitarian mine clearance as well as disaster prevention all over the world in 2003 to the tune of EUR 71.5 million.

Italian government to contribute EURO 350,000 to the Africa Mission in Burundi

Addis Ababa, 30 December 2003 - The African Union Commission welcomes the decision announced by the Italian Government to make a further contribution of Euro 350,000.00 to the African Mission in Burundi (AMIB). This latest contribution is being made after the receipt by the African Union, of an earlier Italian contribution of Euro 200,000.00 for AMIB.

The Commission recalls that, in addition to Italy, the following countries have contributed to AMIB: Germany US$464,920.00; the UK =A32,000,000 while the EU has pledged Euro 25,000,000 for the Mission.

Some 100 former Burundian rebels repatriated from DR Congo

GATUMBA, Burundi, Dec 29 (AFP) - The UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) at the weekend repatriated about 100 former Burundian rebels who fought against Bujumbura from bases in the DRC, officials said Monday.
"These are Burundian rebel ex-combatants who have laid down their arms or gave themselves up to MONUC in Congolese territory," said Frederic Banvunginyunvira, the chairman of Burundi's national disaster commission.

UN SG shocked by brutal murder of Apostolic Nuncio in Burundi

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:
The Secretary-General was deeply shocked and saddened to learn the news of the tragic death of Monsignor Michael Courtney, the Apostolic Nuncio in Burundi, who was brutally murdered during a road ambush today in Minago, about 50 kilometres south of Bujumbura in Bururi province.
