Zambia Teeming With Refugees

LUSAKA, Zambia (PANA) - Zambia is hosting some 205,327 refugees, most of them fleeing armed conflicts in neighbouring Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to UNHCR.
It added that out of the 205,327 refugees spread across Zambia, 161,680 were from Angola, 36,331 from the Democratic Republic of Congo and the balance from Burundi, Rwanda and Somalia.

Meanwhile, UNHCR assistant programme officer in Lusaka, Musengu Kayombo, said that establishment of refugee transit centres in Kalabo and Mongu in Western province was almost complete.

Food demand up by more than 300 percent due to civil strife: aid agency

ROME, Dec 30 (AFP) - Civil strife has been a major factor in pushing up food aid demand in Asia and eastern Europe by more than 300 percent in 1999, the head of the world's largest food aid agency said Thursday.

More Burundian Refugees Flee to Tanzania/ U.N. Official

DAR ES SALAAM (Dec. 30) XINHUA - More Burundian refugees are fleeing into Tanzania's west Kigoma Region as the security situation worsens in their homeland, the top official of the U.N. refugee agency in the region said Thursday.
"A total of 12,720 Burundian refugees had arrived in Kigoma by December 29 compared to 5,365 last month," said Marion Roche, head of a sub-office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Kigoma.

"The high number this month is probably a reflection of the worsening stability in Burundi," said Roche.

Sudan and DR Congo make up with neighbours at Tripoli summit

TRIPOLI, Dec 23 (AFP) - Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo made important normalising accords with their neighbours at the end of an African summit in Tripoli, Libyan state television reported Wednesday.
Sudan signed an agreement with Uganda and Eritrea, while DR Congo made a similar accord with Uganda, the report said.

Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi organised the summit on Tuesday night with presidents Omar al-Beshir of Sudan, Issaias Afeworki of Eritrea, Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Laurent Kabila of DR Congo.
