Uvira : les habitants de Kasenya et Kaseke fuient la menace des rebelles burundais

Les habitants de Kasenya et Kasheke dans le moyen plateau d’Uvira (Sud Kivu) ont abandonné depuis mercredi 23 avril leurs habitations pour se refugier en brousse, a indiqué un notable de ces deux localités. Selon lui, ces populations craignent des représailles des rebelles burundais du Front National pour la libération (FNL) qui les accusent d’avoir signalé leurs positions à l’armée régulière.

KINSHASA, DRC, MAY 22, 2013–On the first day of an historic joint United Nations/World Bank Group mission to the Great Lakes region, the World Bank Group announced $1 billion in proposed new funding to help countries in the region provide better health and education services, generate more cross-border trade, and fund hydroelectricity projects in support of the Great Lakes peace agreement that was signed by 11 countries in February.

Two killed in ambush on Burundi bus: officials

BUJUMBURA, Burundi, May 19, 2013 (AFP) - Two people were killed when a bus carrying 30 passengers was ambushed by armed men believed to be ex-rebels near Burundi's capital Bujumbura, officials said Sunday.

The bus was attacked Saturday near Gatumba on the outskirts of Bujumbura and close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a local government official, Jean-Marie Mutabazi, told AFP.

WFP Helping Burundi’s Fight Against Malnutrition

At Gakere health centre in the northern province of Ngozi, the World Food Programme is providing vital food supplements to malnourished pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under five.

Little Cécile weighed 2.70 kgs at birth in 2010. As time passed, her mother, Vénancie Sinzotuma, noticed that her youngest daughter was not growing normally. As soon as Cécile’s mother learned from a neighbour that WFP had a special feeding programme at Gakere, she did not hesitate.

Les réfugiés congolais fuyant l'Est de la République Démocratique du Congo seront accueillis dans nouveau camp de réfugiés à Kavumu, en province de Cankuzo. Ce « village » a été inauguré ce mercredi 15 mai par le Haut Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les Réfugiés (HCR) est d'une capacité de 13 000 réfugiés. Le nouveau camp devrait en accueillir 5 000 d'ici la fin 2013.

Renewed funding for DRC’s Great Lakes Programme, 2013-2016

A new three-year grant from Sida (Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency) has just been approved and will enable the Danish Refugee Council to continue its advocacy and policy work in the Great Lakes region of Africa until 2016. The new funding will serve to strengthen the efforts of DRC and its partner organisations and to consolidate the results reached in the region since 2010.

Burundi marked its National AIDS Day on 8 May and committed to stopping new HIV infections among children and keeping their mothers alive. The Minister of Health of Burundi, Dr Sabine Ntakarutimana who opened the event at the Kamenge health centre in Bujumbura said, “I am committed to bringing Burundi to zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.”

Handicap International has launched a regional project to prevent sexual violence against children with disabilities in Burundi, Rwanda and Kenya. The organisation decided to take action after learning that children with disabilities are 3 to 4 times more likely to be affected by physical and sexual violence than children without disabilities.
