Western Balkans route ECHO contribution
• The Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) activated by Hungary (11 September) requesting shelters (252), beddings (1000) and blankets (3000); as 17 September 15, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland and Slovenia had responded with items requested, including the totality of the shelter requirements.
In recent weeks, the upsurge of Syrians seeking asylum in European countries has overwhelmed existing capacity. According to UNHCR, as of July 2015 almost 350,000 Syrians have applied for asylum in Europe since the conflict in Syria began, nearly half applying in Germany and Sweden and one third in Serbia, Hungary, Austria, Bulgaria, and the Netherlands combined.
On 2 February 2015 the highest water levels were reached.
• In response to the flooding situation in Albania, four states provided assistance through the European Union Civil Protection (EUCP) mechanism. Austria, Croatia, Montenegro and Slovakia offered beds, blankets, sleeping bags, tents, kitchen sets, generators, rain boots/coats.
• The European Union Civil Protection (EUCP) team deployed on site is facilitating the coordination of incoming assistance and is supporting national authorities in assessing the situation.
Ukraine - Conflict
Intensive attacks in the eastern Ukraine, including the deadly attacks in Mariupol have caused 5,000 casualties since the beginning of the conflict. Humanitarian needs are also increasing; over 900,000 IDPs and 600,000 refugees to neighbouring countries, mainly to Russia have been reported.
In the last few days severe weather conditions (heavy snowfalls, low temperatures, rainfall) have hit parts of central and eastern Europe, in particular Romania and Bulgaria, causing power outages and transportation problems.
