Key Messages

The prevalence of poverty increased from 27.6% in 2008 to 34.1% in 2009, as a consequence of the economic crisis.

Cereal production in 2010 is estimated at 323,600 tonnes, respectively 12% and 11% below 2009 production and 2005-09 average.

Wheat price increased by 15% between August and December 2010, reflecting international prices trends. In December 2010, the international FAO Food Price Index was slightly above the peak reached during the 2007-08 food price crisis.

Cereal imports in 2010 were 6% above the average for 2005-06.

Counterpart Reconstructs Khachpar Village Kindergarten in South Central Armenia

Situation

Khachpar village is approximately 15 km (9 miles) southwest of Armenia's capital, Yerevan. Of the 2,700 inhabitants, more than 98 percent are Azerbaijani refugees. The village has 40-50 kindergarten-aged children who, before the reconstruction, had to commute to school in Yerevan or nearby villages because of the local kindergarten's poor conditions.
