There are no grounds for optimistic statements suggesting that an agreement on peaceful settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagonro Karabakh will be signed in 2006, Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has said.
The conflicting sides are yet to agree upon 7 or 9 issues of principle. The status of peace talks will be known after a meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers in January, Mammadyarov told journalists.

AssA-Irada 23/12/2005 08:06 - Russian mediator has said the parties to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict -- Azerbaijan and Armenia - have agreed on stationing peacekeepers.

"The sides have agreed not to make public details of the agreement", Russian co-chair of the mediating OSCE Minsk Group Yuri Merzlyakov told local ANS TV channel. But Merzlyakov said this would be possible 'only after an agreement on conflict resolution is coordinated and all the envisioned documents are signed' and it will take up to six months for the peacekeeping forces to start their mission on the frontline.

Geneva (ICRC) - On 15 December, an Armenian woman who accidentally crossed from Armeniainto Azerbaijanat the beginning of the month was repatriated under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The operation took place on the road between the Azerbaijani town of Gazakh and the Armenian town of Ijevan.
At the request of the Azerbaijani and Armenian authorities, but in its role of neutral intermediary, the ICRC facilitated the repatriation after ICRC delegates had met the woman and verified that she was returning home of her own free will.

MOSCOW, Dec 6, 2005 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- War could resume if Armenia recognizes the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev said Tuesday.

"The Armenian leadership declares that it could recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh," Abiyev was quoted by a Defense Ministry statement as saying. "If that will be so, it could lead to the resumption of fighting."

Abiyev made the remarks when meeting with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Jim MacDougall, according to reports from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.
