Highlights

Latest information indicates a slightly larger global cereal output in 2001, of 1 870 million tonnes (including rice in milled terms). However, even at this level, production would still be less than the anticipated utilization requirements in 2001/02, leading to a significant draw-down of cereal stocks.

While Afghanistan currently faces a grave food supply situation, food emergencies persist in many other countries (see box on page 6).

Early in 2001 many experts believed that a lasting settlement to the Karabakh question could be achieved during the year. These hopes were fueled by the intensive activity of the Minsk

Report
IFRC
Power of humanity
The International Federation 's collective mission 'to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilising the power of humanity ' is an ambitious goal, but one rarely more needed than now. The tragic events over the latter months of 2001 have shown how much the world requires a global, neutral, unified and able humanitarian organisation such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Fear and uncertainty grip our world, as they have not done for many decades. Labels of nationality, ethnicity and religion appear to be becoming more important in the minds of many.

Armenian Foreign Minister says Karabakh's independence constitutes key bargaining chip

From RFE/RL Caucasus Report Volume 4, Number 38
Yerevan's insistence that "firm legal grounds" exist for the full independence of the currently unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic or its re-unification with Armenia is an important bargaining chip in the internationally sponsored peace talks with Azerbaijan, Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian said on 16 November.

"In terms of strengthening of our negotiating position, it is extremely important for us to substantiate the extreme. Namely, the legal grounds for Nagorno-Karabakh's independence

Caucasus: EU official urges concessions to end Karabakh conflict...

Solana affirmed the EU's support for the ongoing mediation conducted by the OSCE Minsk Group. He also advocated regional cooperation between the South Caucasus states as an effective means of confidence building. Azerbaijan
