The Market Monitor - Trends of staple food prices in vulnerable countries, Issue 19 - April 2013

Global Highlights

• The global cereal price index increased by 8.8% on a year-on-year basis in the January-March 2013 quarter.This increase is driven by increases in real prices of maize and wheat (+8% and +13%, respectively).

Armenia Food Security and Agriculture Highlights, October–December 2012

Key messages

•Agricultural production in 2012 was excellent for all main products: cereals (+3.5% compared to 2011), potatoes (+16%), vegetables (+8%) and fruits and berries (+39%). Prospects for 2013 winter cereal crops are favourable.

•The prevalence of poverty slightly decreased in 2011, from 35.8% in 2010 to 35.0% in 2011 but remained much higher than in 2008 (27.6%).

•Food prices increased by only 2% in 2012 but the price of social bread increased by 11% from January to December 2012 reflecting wheat regional market trends.

Key Messages

  • Food prices increased by 4.4% between December 2011 and March 2012. Potato price increased by 15%, bread and beef prices remained about stable.

  • The production of wheat, potato and fruits is expected to be higher in 2012 than in 2011, due to favorable climatic conditions and adequate methods of production.

  • The economy of the country is slowly recovering from 2009 deep recession, with an expected positive impact on food security and poverty in 2011.

Food Security and Agriculture Highlights: Armenia, October–December 2011

Key Messages

  • In 2011, agricultural production increased by 14% compared with 2010. Cereal production was respectively 35% and 24% above 2010 and 2006–2010 average levels.
  • The Food Price Index increased by 12.3% in 2011 compared with 2010. Prices of bread and beef remained stable between September and December 2011.
  • Cereal imports in 2011 were 2% higher than in 2010, amounting to 437.5 thousand tonnes.
  • Poverty incidence increased from 27.6% in 2008 to 35.8% in 2010, after continuously improving since 1998.

  • Agriculture is expected to recover from 2010’s weak performance despite unfavourable climate conditions.
  • Food prices decreased by 3% during the reporting period (April–June 2011) but remained at high record levels.
