The level of participation in the tsunami warning exercise that took place on 26 March in the Caribbean was unprecedented, compared with similar exercises in 2011 and 2013. Organized under the auspices of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), it reflects the commitment of the countries concerned and a growing awareness of the tsunami threat in the region.

Since the first report received by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) / World Health Organization (WHO) of autochthonous transmission of chikungunya infection on 6 December 2013, there are now six territories in the Region of the Americas, in the Caribbean, that have notified cases; these are the British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthelemy, Saint Martin (French) and Sint Maarten (Dutch). See figure below.

  • Los desastres ocurridos en el cuarto trimestre de 2013 (octubre, noviembre y diciembre) afectaron a unas 699,020 personas. La Sequía e inundaciones fueron los mayores desastres.

  • El Dengue en América Latina y el Caribe ha afectado a más de 2.2 millones de personas y dejado unas 1,000 muertes en 2013.
    América Central, República Dominicana y Paraguay han sido gravemente impactados.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Disasters in the reporting period affected 699,020 people. Drought and flooding were the biggest disasters.

  • Dengue in Latin America and the Caribbean affected more than 2.2 million people and killed 1,000 in 2013. Central America, the Dominican Republic and Paraguay were the most severely affected.

  • OCHA allocated US$2.5 million in CERF funds to assist people affected by drought in Bolivia, and $85,000 in emergency funds to assist those affected by heavy rainfall in the Lesser Antilles.

1 INTRODUCTION

On 7 July 2013, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) produced a weather outlook on a tropical wave which later developed into Tropical Storm Chantal over the central tropical Atlantic Ocean moving speedily in a west-northwestward direction towards the Lesser Antilles. Tropical Storm warnings and watches were in effect for many of the islands of the Lesser Antilles.
