WFP News: The Newsletter of the World Food Programme in West Africa November 2012

WFP’s response to the food crisis in the Sahel

Drought in the Sahel region of West Africa brought hunger to millions for the third time in seven years.
The harvest has started in most areas and crop prospects are overall favorable. Neverthe-less, communities remain weakened after months of hardship during a lean season that was longer and more difficult than usual.

During the lean season when needs were greatest, WFP supported between five and six mil-lion people each month through nutrition and food security activities.

OCHA - Geneva Natural Disasters Highlights No. 2

Secretary General's visit to Niger
The Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, visited Niger from 22 to 25 August to see first-hand United Nations efforts to help the people of one of the world's poorest countries face the challenges of drought, desertification and the recent locust plague that have caused severe food shortages and put nearly 3 million people at risk.

The mission was intended to show solidarity with the people and Government of Niger and also to help focus international attention on the special developmental challenges faced by the countries of the Sahel, such as Niger.
