WFP’s response to the food crisis in the Sahel

Drought in the Sahel region of West Africa brought hunger to millions for the third time in seven years.
The harvest has started in most areas and crop prospects are overall favorable. Neverthe-less, communities remain weakened after months of hardship during a lean season that was longer and more difficult than usual.

During the lean season when needs were greatest, WFP supported between five and six mil-lion people each month through nutrition and food security activities.

En collaboration avec les Sociétés nationales de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge, le Comité international de la Croix-Rouge (CICR) a fourni une assistance humanitaire à 4,3 millions de déplacés internes dans 32 pays en 2010. Tous avaient dû fuir de chez eux en raison de conflits armés ou d'autres situations de violence. L'institution a alloué 200 millions de francs suisses aux activités menées en faveur des déplacés internes, soit 20 % du budget prévu pour les opérations du CICR en 2010.

Jeddah : Tuesday, April 11, 2006 - The Board of Executive Directors of the Islamic Development Bank, which concluded its 237th session at the Bank's Headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Monday 10/4/2006 after two days of deliberations, approved an amount totalling US$ 356 million for project financing and trade operations.

H.E. Dr Ahmed Mohammed Ali, IDB President, who chaired the session stated that the Board approvals included new development projects in Indonesia, Lebanon, Niger and Morocco.
