SOUTH SUDAN

Targeted violence against aid workers has escalated in the past two weeks. On 25 March, seven aid workers from South Sudan and Kenya were killed in a road ambush while travelling from Juba, the capital, to Pibor in Jonglei.

This comes after two IOM staff were killed and three injured in a road ambush in Yirol county in Lakes on 14 March, which led to three humanitarian organisations engaged in cholera response in the area suspending their activities on 23 March.

Executive summary On December 16-18th the MENA Urban Disaster Risk Reduction & Management workshop was held in Beirut as the last of a regional series of workshop/consultations in 2013. The workshop was supported by the IFRC Urban DRR/DM programme and the IFRC MENA office to:

  1. To achieve better and deeper understanding of the urban contexts including challenges, opportunities and priorities in MENA for Red Cross and Red Crescent DRR/DM interventions and programmes

The Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF) is a cost-effective way to support humanitarian action in Sudan. Under the direction of the Humanitarian Coordinator (HC), the SHF aims to support the timely allocation and disbursement of donor resources to the most critical humanitarian needs as defined by the Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) or any agreed upon strategy by the HC. The SHF provides funding to international and national non–governmental organizations and UN agencies. The SHF receives voluntary donor contributions and supports humanitarian response year–round.

Somalia is in the grip of an intense drought, induced by consecutive seasons of poor rainfall. The country is on the brink of a famine, just six years after another famine led to the loss of a quarter of a million lives. In the worst-affected areas, inadequate rainfall and lack of water have wiped out crops and killed livestock, leaving half the population (6.2 million people) in need of humanitarian assistance. Nearly 3 million of these people cannot meet their daily food requirements.

MAGASCAR

As of 17 March, over 433,000 people have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Enawo, which made landfall on the northeastern coast of Madagascar between 7-10 March.

Over 81 people have been killed, 253 wounded, and 247,000 displaced. Floods have damaged health facilities, leaving over 250,000 people without access to health services. An estimated 175,000 people do not have access to safe potable water, and water-borne diseases are on the rise.
