Longtime Congolese leader Denis Sassou Nguesso was sworn in for another five-year term Saturday following a contested presidential election last month that has raised tensions in the country.

At an inauguration ceremony that formally extended his 32-year grip on power, Sassou Nguesso vowed to focus on boosting the economy and tackling youth unemployment.

"This five-year term will be that of the economy," he said in an address in Brazzaville attended by several other African heads of state.

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon:

The Secretary-General is deeply concerned about recent reports that security operations undertaken by the Government of the Republic of the Congo in the Pool region allegedly resulted in attacks against civilian targets and displacement of the population from the affected areas. He is also troubled about restrictions on access to the region, which hamper adequate information gathering, evaluation and reporting on the situation.

Congo's President Denis Sassou Nguesso has sacked a former rebel leader and clergyman from a junior post in the presidency over suspicions that he spearheaded a deadly "terror attack" this week.

The government said three security troops, two civilians and 12 assailants perished in Monday's violence in the south of the capital Brazzaville.

A statement said Frederic Bintsamou had been dismissed as a "delegate charged with promoting peace and healing the scars of war."

The runner-up in Republic of Congo's election called on his supporters on Wednesday to accept the official results of the violence-tainted poll that returned longtime president Denis Sassou Nguesso to power.

Guy-Brice Parfait Kolelas said he did not wish to stir up controversy by challenging Monday's Constitutional Court's finding that Sassou Nguesso, Congo's ruler of 32 years, won last month's election with over 60 percent of the vote.

M. Bathily « suit de près l'évolution de la situation en République du Congo suite aux événements survenus dans la nuit du 3 au 4 avril à Brazzaville », a indiqué le Bureau des Nations Unies pour l'Afrique centrale (UNOCA) dans un communiqué de presse.

At least five people died and buildings were torched in clashes between government forces and suspected rebels in Congo's capital, the government said Tuesday, saying some 50 people had been arrested over the "terror attack".

A dozen attackers were also killed in the fighting in the south of the city on Monday, which saw six police stations, a town hall and two customs checkpoints set on fire, government spokesman Thierry Moungalla said on Twitter.
