Consensus and impartial code of conduct to favor preparation of 2015 elections in peaceful climate and trust, SRSG says

23 May 2013 – Consensus between all political parties and actors over legal (normative) and administrative electoral related issues as well as an impartial electoral code will favor the preparations of 2015 elections in a peaceful climate and trust, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB) Parfait Onanga-Anyanga stressed.

Two killed in ambush on Burundi bus: officials

BUJUMBURA, Burundi, May 19, 2013 (AFP) - Two people were killed when a bus carrying 30 passengers was ambushed by armed men believed to be ex-rebels near Burundi's capital Bujumbura, officials said Sunday.

The bus was attacked Saturday near Gatumba on the outskirts of Bujumbura and close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a local government official, Jean-Marie Mutabazi, told AFP.

WFP Helping Burundi’s Fight Against Malnutrition

At Gakere health centre in the northern province of Ngozi, the World Food Programme is providing vital food supplements to malnourished pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under five.

Little Cécile weighed 2.70 kgs at birth in 2010. As time passed, her mother, Vénancie Sinzotuma, noticed that her youngest daughter was not growing normally. As soon as Cécile’s mother learned from a neighbour that WFP had a special feeding programme at Gakere, she did not hesitate.

Ce « village » a été inauguré ce mercredi 15 mai par le Haut Commissariat des Nations Unies pour les Réfugiés (HCR) est d'une capacité de 13 000 réfugiés. Le nouveau camp devrait en accueillir 5 000 d'ici la fin 2013.

Burundi marked its National AIDS Day on 8 May and committed to stopping new HIV infections among children and keeping their mothers alive. The Minister of Health of Burundi, Dr Sabine Ntakarutimana who opened the event at the Kamenge health centre in Bujumbura said, “I am committed to bringing Burundi to zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination and zero AIDS-related deaths.”

An investment fund for farmers

Burundi has all it takes to successfully develop an agricultural sector: a fine climate, fertile soils and a tradition in farming. Yet, there is one essential element missing to modernise this sector and have it enter the 21st century: capital. To do something about this, BTC's agricultural programme in Burundi (PAIOSA) launched a new initiative to support agricultural entrepreneurs in Burundi to acquire equipment and infrastructure.

World Bank Boost for Sustainable Land and Water Management in Burundi to Reach Over 15,000 Households

WASHINGTON, April 30, 2013 – The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors today approved a US$4.2 million grant to support the Government of Burundi’s efforts to promote sustainable land and water management on the country’s coffee farms in Bubanza, Bururi, and Muyinga provinces.

The grant is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for which the World Bank is an implementing agency and trustee.

Bujumbura, 19 avril 2013 (DWG) : Des pluies diluviennes tombées mardi dernier en commune de Mwakiro ont occasionné de lourdes pertes, selon Agence Burundaise de Presse. Sur la colline Kiyanza par exemple, plus de sept maisons ont été endommagées. On recense aussi de petits animaux domestiques et de la volaille tués. Les informations en provenance de la localité affirment que des centaines d’hectares de cultures vivrières ont été complètement submergés dans les marais. De vastes étendues d’eau étaient encore visibles le matin de ce jeudi, précisent les mêmes sources.
