President Aliyev allocates AZN 14 mln for construction of residential buildings for IDPs

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday signed an order to improve living conditions for IDP families, AzerTac state news agency reported.

Under the order, AZN 14 million has been allocated from the President`s Reserve Fund for 2013 to the State Committee for Work with Refugee and IDPs for the construction of the new multi-storey residential buildings in Mushfigabad residential area Garadagh for 155 IDP families of 700 people temporarily settled in Binagadi district of Baku.

Karabakh Offers New Home to Syrian Armenians

After completing his visit to Zagatala District, President Ilham Aliyev arrived in Gakh District.

The President visited a new private house built for Abdulla Mammadov in the earthquake-affected Gulluk village of Gakh District. A. Mammadov’s previous house became unusable in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Azerbaijan’s north-western region in early May of this year.

The Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society provided humanitarian assistance to those affected by an earthquake

On 07 and 18 May, 2012 an earthquake struck Gakh, Zagatala, Sheki and Balakan districts of Azerbaijan Republic. As a result of the earthquake many constructions and private houses were damaged. In accordance with its mission and mandate the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society considered it necessary to provide relevant humanitarian assistance to people affected by the earthquake. For this purpose the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society conducted an assessment in Zagatala and Gakh districts.

Karabakh re-elects leader as tensions rumble

STEPANAKERT, Azerbaijan, July 20, 2012 (AFP) - The unrecognised region of Nagorny-Karabakh re-elected leader Bako Sahakyan, amid growing tensions between Azerbaijan and Armenia over its status, officials said Friday.

Sahakyan received 66.7 percent of the vote while his main rival, retired army general Vitaliy Balasanian, got 32.5 percent, according to the preliminary results published on the central election commission's website.

Turnout was 73.4 percent in Thursday's vote, it added.

Residents of Baku, a handsome city awash in petrodollars, have been given something new to worry about by earthquake forecasters from the Massachusetts Institute for Technology.

BAKU, June 6, 2012 (AFP) - US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Wednesday warned of possible "disastrous consequences" after a flare-up of deadly violence between ex-Soviet enemies Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Clinton held talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku as the reported death toll in gunbattles between the two neighbours this week rose to nine amid the worst clashes since 2010.

Armenians kill five Azerbaijani troops in border clash

BAKU, June 5, 2012 (AFP) - Armenian forces killed five Azerbaijani soldiers in a border clash Tuesday, in a new flaring of tensions as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visits the volatile Caucasus region.

The Azerbaijani defence ministry said fighting broke out when "a group of Armenian saboteurs made an attempt to penetrate the military positions of the national army" in the country's north-west -- the second reported outbreak of deadly violence along the border between the ex-Soviet enemies this week.

Minister: Several thousand new homes will be built in Azerbaijan’s quake-hit Zagatala region

Zagatala, which in early May was hit by a strong earthquake, will have new homes built and delapidated homes restored, Azerbaijani Emergencies Minister Kamaladdin Heydarov told reporters on Friday.

He said houses that cannot be restored will be demolished and rebuilt.

Aid to victims of the Earthquake

Dr. Novruz Aslanov, president of Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society, deputy of parliament visited Zagatala region of Azerbaijan (North-West) on the 21st of May with the aim of rendering humanitarian aid to the victims. Experts of disaster preparedness and disaster response department of AzRCS participated in that visit too. During the visit Novruz Aslanov, president of AZRCS held a meeting with Mubariz Ahmadzadeh, head of Local Executive Authorities of Zagatala district and visited the families affected by the earthquake.
