Caribbean Red Cross societies step up response to H1N1

In response to the H1N1 pandemic, Red Cross societies around the Caribbean are supporting their statutory health care systems in preparing communities to respond to H1N1. Thanks to funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Red Cross staff and volunteers have been working directly with community members to share information on how to reduce the transmission of the virus.

Emily becomes hurricane, threatens Caribbean isles

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, July 13 (Reuters) - The fifth storm of the Atlantic hurricane season grew into a hurricane on Wednesday as it churned through the Windward Islands of the eastern Caribbean.

Emily's sustained winds hit 90 mph (144 kph) as it approached Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines and threatened Venezuela and the Netherlands Antilles.

At 11 p.m. EDT on Wednesday (0300 GMT on Thursday), the center of Hurricane Emily was about 45 miles (72 km) east-southeast of Grenada and moving to the west at 18 mph (29 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

OAS concerned about hurricanes' havoc on caribbean

Hurricanes currently beating down on several Caribbean countries are a major concern to the Organization of American States, with Secretary General José Miguel Insulza today expressing sympathy over the loss of life in Haiti and other countries in the Caribbean. Particular concern was expressed over the impact of hurricane Emily on Grenada.

The Netherlands to assist hurricane victims

The Dutch government is giving 458,000 euro to assist the people of Aruba, hit by Hurricane Ivan. The aid for Aruba is a contribution to an appeal raised by the Aruban Red Cross, aimed at assisting the worst affected victims.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also making 250,000 euro available for the victims of Hurricane Jeanne in Haiti. The International Federation of the Red Cross will use the money for direct emergency aid (food, blankets, etcetera), drinking water, and shelter.

Hurricane Ivan kills at least 14 in Caribbean

CARACAS, Sept 9 (AFP) - Hurricane Ivan has killed at least 14 people in Grenada, Tobago and Venezuela as it barrels toward Jamaica, strengthening to a Category Five storm with winds of up to 255 kilometers (160 miles) per hour, officials and local media said Thursday.

At 1200 GMT, Ivan was some 735 kilometers (455 miles) southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

Overnight, it was upgraded to a Category Five hurricane, the top level on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane intensity scale.

Extremely dangerous' hurricane Ivan pounds Barbados moves through Caribbean

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad Sept 7 (AFP) - Ivan, an "extremely dangerous" hurricane Tuesday knocked out power in Barbados and threatened eastern Caribbean islands, forecasters and emergency officials said.

The eye of the powerful storm moved over Barbados Tuesday afternoon, and headed for the eastern Caribbean, where officials issued a hurricane warning for St Vincent, the Grenadines, Grenada and the Netherlands Antilles islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

Hurricane Ivan kills 24 in Grenada

Mexico City (dpa) - Hurricane Ivan churned Wednesday past Venezuela with winds of 220 kilometres per hour on a path toward Jamaica after tearing across the island of Grenada, killing at least 24 people and severely damaging its capital.

The toll, which rose from three earlier in the day, was reported by the Caribbean news agency CMC, which cited local officials.

Twenty-eight people aboard three vessels were also missing off the Venezuelan coast.
