Statelessness: More than 3,000 stateless people given Turkmen nationality

DASHOGUZ, Turkmenistan, December 7 (UNHCR) – As soon as she was handed her citizenship papers, Guljahan Egenova began thinking excitedly about the whole new future ahead of her. "I am proud," said the pretty 24-year-old during a recent ceremony in the northern Turkmenistan city of Dashoguz.

She had been stateless since 1995, when her parents moved to Turkmenistan. "With my new nationality, I get the right to pursue higher studies, I get the right to vote and I will be able to travel freely," the young woman said, with a big smile.

The briefing was held jointly by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

Turkmenistan: First ever registration of all refugees completed

This is a summary of what was said by UNHCR spokesperson Ron Redmond - to whom quoted text may be attributed - at the press briefing, on 18 March 2005, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

UNHCR and the government of Turkmenistan have completed the first ever registration of all refugees in Turkmenistan. The exercise began in October 2004, and was finalised at the end of February. Some 11,000 ethnic Turkmen who had arrived from Tajikistan and more than 500 ethnic Turkmen from Afghanistan were recorded.

The exercise will now lead to negotiations

Turkmenistan: 140 refugees get third country resettlement in Canada

ANKARA, 14 October (IRIN) - Dozens of refugees in Turkmenistan, mainly Afghans and Azeris, are set to be resettled in Canada in the near future, according to the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Ashgabat. The Canadian government has accepted 140 refugees for resettlement, including 25 families from Azerbaijan, 22 families from Afghanistan, 17 families from Iran and one stateless person. They are expected to leave for Canada in the near future.

TURKMENABAD, 17 Jul 2003 (IRIN) - The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in conjunction with the Turkmen government and USAID, has been working to provide reproductive health facilities in the southeast of the desert nation in order to bring care to isolated communities and assist Afghans living on or near the border, an official of UNFPA has told IRIN.

Turkmenistan: Turkmenabad to remain key humanitarian hub

TURKMENABAD, 29 May (IRIN) - As part of the United Nations' ongoing humanitarian commitment to millions of people inside Afghanistan, Turkmenabad - Turkmenistan's second-largest city - will continue to play a key role in relief efforts to the country.

Turkmenistan: Delay in road repair could impede humanitarian assistance

KERKI, 27 May (IRIN) - Efforts to repair and restore a critical 60-km stretch of road between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan were being delayed due to bureaucracy, an official from the World Food Programme (WFP) charged on Sunday.
"We're frustrated," a WFP civil engineer, Peter Risch, told IRIN in the Turkmen town of Kerki, a dusty frontier town north of the Afghan border. "We have teams and equipment on standby just waiting," he maintained.

Turkmenistan: Afghans going home

ISLAMABAD, 25 April (IRIN) - With repatriation gaining momentum in neighbouring Pakistan and Iran, Afghan refugees in Turkmenistan - estimated at 6,000 - are also going home. Largely overlooked given their limited numbers, these refugees are now returning at a rate of 50 per month.

U.S., Turkmen diplomats discuss aid for Afghanistan

Visiting U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Lynn Pascoe met with Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov in Ashgabat on 9 November to discuss the fight against terrorism and the shipment of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan, Interfax reported. A planned meeting between Pascoe and Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov was cancelled for reasons unknown. On 12 November, Reuters quoted USAID official Andrew Natsios as saying that until Uzbekistan opens the border bridge across the Amu-Darya at Termez, Turkmenistan will remain the single most important transit country

Aid ministers from ex-Soviet states to meet in Dushanbe Friday

MOSCOW, Oct 15 (AFP) - Russian Emergencies Minister Sergei Shoigu will discuss aid to Afghanistan at a meeting with his counterparts from the Commonwealth of Independent States (ex-Soviet republics minus the Baltics), Interfax reported Monday.

"Russia has launched a major programme of aid to the Afghan people," Shoigu's deputy Yury Vorobiyev told the news agency.

The Russian government has allocated nearly four million dollars for the purchase and delivery of aid via Tajikistan, and has already dispatched almost 80 tonnes of food, 320 tents and 10 tonnes

An earthquake measuring over 7.2 on the Richter scale hit western Turkmenistan during the night/early hours of December 7. Two weaker aftershocks occurred shortly after. The epicenter was concentrated in the oil rich Balkan oblast near Balkanabad (Nebit Dag), the provincial capital, approximately 80 kilometres inland from the coastal town of Turkmenbashi. Six casualties were initially reported in the affected oblast although these are yet to be confirmed; numerous people have been treated at the local hospital in Nebit Dag for minor injuries. Fresh tremors felt after strong Turkmen earthquake

ASHGABAT, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Fresh tremors rocked Turkmenistan on Thursday, a day after the Central Asian state was hit by a powerful earthquake but officials said it caused no casualties or significant damage.

A spokesman for Turkmenistan's national civil defence unit told Reuters that mild tremors had been recorded at 0353 GMT in the oil producing towns of Balkanabad and Kazanzhik, 500 km (310 miles) west of the capital Ashgabat.
