Hail fell for just half an hour on May 12, but that was enough to devastate orchards and vegetables across an area of 170 square kilometres belonging to more than 12,000 farmers.

Armenian Earthquake Survivors Complain About Authorities' Response

VARKHAVAR, Armenia -- When Iran was hit by devastating twin earthquakes on August 11, neighbor Armenia was quick to offer its help and extend condolences for the more than 300 victims.

But Armenians affected by the aftershocks say their government has all but ignored them.

Locals in Varkhavar, one of the villages in southern Armenia that sustained damage, say they have been left to fend for themselves.

"Not a single official has come here to see how we are doing," Valerik Davtyan told RFE/RL.

Unrecognised Karabakh votes as tensions rise

07/19/2012 01:24 GMT

by Mariam Harutyunyan

STEPANAKERT, Azerbaijan, July 19, 2012 (AFP) - The self-declared state of Nagorny-Karabakh, recognised by no country in the world, on Thursday votes in leadership elections as fears grow of a new conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over its status.

Still internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan, Nagorny-Karabakh was claimed by ethnic Armenians backed by Yerevan in a horrific war after the collapse of the Soviet Union that claimed some 30,000 lives.
