LA GOMERA, Spain, Aug 13, 2012 (AFP) - Wildfires drove thousands of people from their homes near a rare nature reserve in Spain's Canary Islands on Monday after a separate mainland blaze killed two, authorities said.

Firefighters struggled to control the flames that engulfed the wooded hillsides on the island of La Gomera, reducing lush green trees to black dust, spewing grey smoke and displacing residents and tourists.

BARCELONA, July 30, 2012 (AFP) - Firefighters said Monday that a fire that killed four people and ravaged thousands of hectares of land in Spain's northeastern Catalonia region last week has finally been extinguished.

"Firefighters inspected the whole perimeter and did not find any more burning areas," they said in a statement.

A total of 13,088 hectares (32,341 acres) were burned after the blaze broke out on July 22 near the French border. Officials believe it was likely caused by a discarded cigarette butt.

Figueres, Spain, July 24, 2012 (AFP) - Hundreds of firefighters backed by water-bombing planes are battling wind-fuelled wildfire in northeast Spain that killed four people including a teenage girl on Monday.

Another 23 people were injured, including eight who remained in hospital, the Catalan regional government said.

La Jonquera, Spain, July 22, 2012 (AFP) - A wildfire whipped up by strong winds in northeastern Spain left three people dead Sunday and about 100 people injured and forced thousands of residents to remain indoors, officials said.

A 60-year-old man and his 15-year-old daughter drowned after after they threw themselves into the sea to escape the approaching flames near the town of Portbou just across the border with France, the Catalan government said.

• Se han establecido 5 zonas de distribución de alimentos, agua y otros bienes de primera necesidad como kits higiénicos, kits materno infantiles y mantas.
