Fire destroys Kosovo Roma refugee camp in Montenegro

07/25/2012 13:23 GMT

by Olivera Nikolic

PODGORICA, July 25, 2012 (AFP) - Some 800 Kosovo Roma, including children, were left homeless after a fire tore through a shantytown refugee camp on the outskirts of the Montenegrin capital Podgorica, officials said Wednesday.

No one was hurt and it is not clear what started the blaze in the camp, where the Council of Europe in February described living conditions as "inhuman and hazardous".

The fire broke out early Tuesday and quickly reduced the camp, which consisted of some 40 wooded shacks, to ashes.

16 Days of Activism: Fathers urged to act as role models in Montenegro

PODGORICA, Montenegro, December 4 (UNHCR) - A coalition of interested parties in Montenegro is marking a global campaign against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) by encouraging fathers and father figures to set an example to young males.

The Montenegrin initiative was launched by the UN refugee agency and partners to coincide with the annual 16 Days of Activism to Eliminate Violence Against Women, an international campaign originating from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute in 1991. The 16 days began on November 25.

UNHCR helping refugees avoid statelessness in Montenegro

PODGORICA, MONTENEGRO, Aug. 5 (UNHCR) - At the age of seven, Adnan Behuli finally legally exists. Although the young refugee boy was born in a hospital, he was until recently officially "invisible" in Montenegro, because his birth had never been registered.

Now, with the help of UNHCR's legal aid implementing partners, Catholic Relief Services/Legal Centre, the boy has a birth certificate - a legal identity that will allow him to enroll in elementary school this September.

Adnan is one of 4,338 Roma, Ashkaelia,

World Environment Day: Roma scrap collectors get by in Montenegro camp

KONIK, Montenegro, June 5 (UNHCR) - Sebastian Krasnici is a modern-day rag and bone man,* touring the Montenegrin capital, Podgorica, from morning to night on his tricycle in a daily quest for scraps of iron, copper and aluminium.

The 22-year-old is just one of many ethnic Roma, Ashkalia, and Egyptian refugees who earn a living by collecting recyclable waste in this small Balkans nation, which most of them fled to from neighbouring Kosovo in 1999.

Sebastian is the family breadwinner, bringing in enough money to feed his family of seven members in Konik,

UNHCR helps Roma group find a new home in Montenegro

BERANE, Montenegro, October 16 (UNHCR) - The settlement on the banks of the Lim River in the northern Montenegrin town of Berane was barely fit for habitation, but it was the only place that a group of 27 uprooted Roma families could call home.

"Riverside" was one of many formal and informal settlements set up around Montenegro to house ethnic Serbs as well as members of the Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian minorities who fled their homes in neighbouring Kosovo in 1999 and 2000. The difference was that it was the sole one built on private property.

UNHCR mobilizes lawyers to combat statelessness in Montenegro

PODGORICA, Montenegro, May 31 (UNHCR) - Bursting with energy, Hadzi and Maksum Miftari grin at visitors from the family living-room sofa before rushing outside to play with their friends. They seem full of life, but in legal terms the boys practically did not exist in their birthplace Montenegro or anywhere else until recently.

It seems inconceivable that bureaucratic red tape could have derailed the hopes and potential of Hadzi, aged six, and his four-year-old brother, Maksum, whose parents fled to Montenegro from Kosovo in 1999 to escape persecution based on their Roma ethnicity.

After the split of Serbia-Montenegro, a State Party since 2003, Serbia automatically remained as a State Party and the ICBL wrote to the Montenegro Minister of Foreign Affairs urging him to clarify his country's status regarding the MBT.

Together, Serbia and Montenegro had begun to destroy stockpiled antipersonnel mines in August 2005 and by March 2006 had destroyed 649,217 mines, almost half of the total stockpile. In Montenegro,
