P-au-Pr, 23 mai 2013 [AlterPresse] --- D’importantes inondations ont été enregistrées à la capitale suite aux pluies diluviennes qui se sont abattues sur plusieurs régions du pays en fin d’après-midi de ce 23 mai, a constaté AlterPresse.

Parmi les zones les plus touchées, figurent la commune de Tabarre (périphérie nord) et des secteurs de Pétionville (périphérie est), notamment Frères et Pernier.

A Tabarre, des rues ont été transformées en rivières, que des centaines de personnes se sont risquées à traverser, rapportent un collaborateur d’AlterPresse.

$3 million in grants to test solar, hybrid, biomass and small-scale hydro solutions

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will support a $3 million technical cooperation project to help the government of Haiti test different renewable energy solutions with the goal of expanding rural electrification.

En partenariat avec ONU-Habitat, le Centre de Compétences Reconstruction (CCR) de la Coopération Suisse a organisé à Jacmel quatre semaines de formation sur les techniques modernes et méthodes de construction chainée au profit d’une vingtaine d’ingénieurs civils et techniciens en construction.

« On n’est pas prêts d’oublier les images que nous ont laissé les constructions qui ne respectent pas les normes en janvier 2010 dernier lors du tremblement de terre », a rappelé Charles Edner, un des participants.

May 16, 2013—Ensuring that homes are never as vulnerable as the 300,000 buildings destroyed or damaged by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake of January 12, 2010, is a vital part of the rebuilding process in Haiti. Through the CARMEN Project, UMCOR Haiti, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the engineering firm Miyamoto International, has made a significant contribution toward achieving that goal.

The Political Champions of Resilience, a group established in 2012 with high-ranking officials from leading international institutions – including the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department ECHO, UNDP, OCHA, CARICOM, the UK, USAID, and the World Bank – held a two day meeting on April 20th and 21st to draw increased attention and resources towards disaster resilience.

April 25 marks World Malaria Day – a day to celebrate the gains made in the fight against malaria. During the last decade, reported malaria cases have been cut in half in more than 40 countries. Malaria deaths have dropped by nearly 330,000 each year, and an estimated 485 fewer children are dying each day from malaria.
