IOM staff wounded in Kabul attack

Afghanistan - IOM’s compound in Kabul was at the centre of a complex attack on Friday afternoon which has left one international staff member with severe burns, and three other injured. At least one Afghan security personnel died assisting IOM staff to safety, in a firefight that lasted more than six hours.

A large explosion shortly after 4pm local time was felt across the city, according to reports. Heavily armed persons then entered the IOM compound.

UN Special Representative Ján Kubiš on the attack in Kabul

KABUL, 24 May 2013 – I strongly condemn today’s terrorist attack centred on a compound of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in central Kabul.

Three IOM staff members were injured, one seriously. A staff member from the International Labour Organization was also injured. All are now receiving medical attention.

All United Nations staff members in the capital have been accounted for.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility, alleging that their target was a “military rest house.”

Policeman, five gunmen killed in Kabul Taliban attack

KABUL, May 24, 2013 (AFP) - Explosions rocked central Kabul for several hours on Friday after Taliban gunmen launched a major suicide and gun attack centred on a compound of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

One police officer was killed and five militants were shot dead as security forces hunted down the attackers, with prolonged bursts of gunfire and grenade blasts heard across the Afghan capital.

Demining on hold in Senegal's Casamance Region

Goma : situation humanitaire précaire dans les camps de Mugunga et Bulengo

Les récents affrontements entre les Forces armées de la République Démocratiques du Congo (FARDC) et les rebelles du Mouvement du 23 mars (M23) provoquent la fuite des déplacés qui vivent dans les camps de Mugunga et Bulengo, deux sites situés dans la banlieue de la ville de Goma (Nord-Kivu) depuis le 20 mai dernier. Cette situation précaire contraint l’ONG internationale Médecin Sans Frontières (MSF) à suspendre momentanément les activités dans ces deux camps. Le point du sujet dans cet entretien que Jody Nkashama a eu avec Thierry Goffeau, chef de mission à MSF/GOMA.

Doctors Without Borders Shuts Clinic in Northern Nigeria

ABUJA — Aid organization Doctors Without Borders says it has suspended emergency health care in Borno State, Nigeria, - the heart of an insurgency now under assault by government troops. The decision comes after five gunmen hijacked an aid vehicle on Saturday.

A couple of weeks ago, Doctors without Borders moved into Baga, a town where thousands of homes were burnt to the ground and hundreds of people were killed in April. Since then, the organization says it has been treating 80 patients a day, half of them children.

Statement / Geneva / Damascus - The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement condemns the killing of Abdo Darwish, a driver with the Al-Hassakeh branch of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent who was shot dead on his way to work on 14 May.

Mr Darwish was wearing his Syrian Red Crescent uniform, clearly indicating his affiliation with the Movement, when he was targeted by snipers and shot at.

UN reinforces peacekeeping presence in Pibor town amid violence

16 May 2013 – Additional United Nations peacekeepers are on alert to protect civilians in the town of Pibor in South Sudan’s Jonglei state where the situation remains tense amid recent violence, looting and displacement, the Secretary-General’s spokesperson today said.

“The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has a full time presence in Pibor and is continuously monitoring the security situation, particularly in respect to the few remaining residents,” the spokesperson told journalists in New York.

Geneva/Sana'a (ICRC) – Three staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) who had been held since the beginning of the week by armed individuals in the vicinity of Ja’ar, in Abyan governorate, are now safely back with their colleagues in Aden.

"We are relieved and extremely happy to have our colleagues back with us," said Cedric Schweizer, who heads the ICRC delegation in Yemen. "We would like to thank all those who gave us their support unconditionally with the aim of getting our colleagues back safe and sound."
