INAD hands over landmine-free field in Cusse

Lubango – The National Demining Institute (INAD) announced that it will deliver Thursday a fully mine cleared field to the Government of the southern Huila province.

The 377,256 m2 field is based in Cusse commune, Caconda district, Huila province.

The information was released Wednesday by INAD director in Huila province, Dulce Tito, stressing that the mine clearance works lasted 12 months and removed 556 assorted explosive devices, 30 anti personal mines and two anti-tank.

598 cases of cholera recorded in Huíla

Lubango – Some 23 people died in the southern Huíla province victims of cholera, from February to the present day, in a total of 598 cases recorded by the local sanitary authorities.

This was said to Angop on Sunday by the chief of department for Public Health and Endemic Disease Control, João Kiala.

He said that most of the deaths were recorded in Lubango district with 14 cases.

João Kiala stated that six patients are admitted this moment in the Centre for Cholera Treatment of Lubango city, all in the favourable recovery phase.

30,000 peasant families hit by drought in Kuando-Kubango

Menongue - At least 33,000 peasant families of Southern East Kuando-Kubango province are affected by drought that has been hitting the region and destroyed some plantations, Angop has learnt.

A press note delivered to Angop states that drought hits the Municipalities of Cuangar, Cali, Dirico, Kuchi, Mavinga and Nancova.

The document was delivered by the chief of the Technical Unit of Co-ordination of Humanitarian Aid (Utach), Augusto Chicanho, who added that some animals have been destroying plantations of manioc and sweet potatoes.

Govt distributes 300 tonnes of goods to assist people affected by drought

Ondjiva – At least 300 tonnes of several goods, among foodstuff and medicines, were distributed by the Angolan government, through the Ministry of Assistance and Social Reintegration and National Civil Protection Services, aimed to assist the population affected by the drought in the southern Cunene province.

This was said to Angop on Saturday in Ondjiva city by the provincial governor, António Didalelwa, during the distribution act of 181 tones of several products.

Cholera outbreak confirmed in Cabinda

Cabinda - Health authorities in Northern Cabinda have announced the existence of cholera outbreak, due to diharroeas cases in the capital city of the province, Angop has learnt.

This was disclosed by the provincial secretary of health, Carlos Zeca, who explained that this can be confirmed through the laboratory exames done in Luanda.

Carlos Zeca said that the first cases were recorded on April 29, 2013, totalising currently 89 cases with six deaths, being three at home and the rest in hospitals.

Malaria claims 75 lives in three months

Saurimo - Some 75 people died of malaria in the first quarter of the current year in eastern Lunda Sul province, Angop learnt Thursday.

According to the provincial director general, Hortência Miguel, about 15, 508 cases of disease were registered, a fact that worries the officials.

To reverse the situation, Miguel disclosed that the health authorities are carrying out awareness campaign in the communities centred on measures, prevention and combat the disease

More than 75.000 children vaccinated against polio

Menongue – Some 75. 159 children, under the age of five, were immunised against poliomyelitis in Menongue municipality, south-eastern Kuando Kubango province, during the vaccination campaign held over the last weekend.

This was said to Angop on Tuesday by the director of the local health sector, Carlos António Jonas.

He considered positive the campaign, having into account that figures overcame the expectations, thanks to the role played by the teams involved in the awareness campaigns.

Rains displace over 200 families in Kamanongue

Luena - At least 239 families have become homeless following the last rains that also destroyed 49 residences in Kamanongue district, eastern Moxico province.

The local administrator, Artur Emanuel Lemos Sapalo, who was speaking to Angop Wednesday, said that the floods destroyed plantation fields and one of the headquarters of the Action Committee of the ruling MPLA party.

Last week, Artur Sapalo voiced concern about ravines that also caused by the rains in the locality, about 52km north of Luena city.

Executive to assist Cunene drought hit peasants

Angola, Ondjiva – The director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in southern Cunene province, Dinis Pedro Pacavira, said Thursday in Ondjiva that measures are being taken to help the peasant populations affected by the drought hitting the region in the 2012/2013 agricultural season.

According to the official, the scarcity of rains currently noted in the province has led to a failure in the agricultural production, which is threatening the harvest of the main crops.

Over a thousand displaced by rains in Malanje province

Malanje - At least three people were killed and 1,730 left homeless following the collapse of 346 homes since September 2012 in 11 of northern Malanje province's 14 municipalities, Angop learned.

This was announced on Tuesday by the local provincial commander of the Fire Department, Venâncio Eduardo, during the 1st ordinary meeting of the organ.

The meeting aimed at making a provisional assesseent of the damage caused by the rains and the response to assist those affected.

Drought threatens harvest in Kuito Kuanavale

Menongue - Rain shortage in Kuito Kuanavale, south-western Kuando Kubango Province, over the last days may hinder harvest in the region, said the local head of the agriculture department, Fernando Tchipengo.

According to the source, this situation may put at risk the harvest of maize and other cereals, although the peasants have received tools for the foment of agricultural production.

The peasants also received seeds of maize, beans, cereals, as well as fertilizers, under the programme of fight against hunger and poverty.

CNIDAH staff attends landmine action training

Huambo – At least 25 staff of the central Huambo province Landmine Action Commission and administration personnel are since Tuesday attending a training programme to improve their landmine action and demining skills.

The four-day CNIDAH course is also intended to improve the staff’s knowledge of the types of the landmines and unexploded ordnances, types of demining operations, landmine risk education and assistance to victims.

Rain displaces over 90 families in Songo

Songo - At least 93 families were displaced after heavy rains destroyed 31 homes in Zulumongo in Songo district, nothern Uíge province.

According to the local chieftain, Pedro Miguel Bambi, in addition to residences the storm injured an old woman.

Songo district is located 40 km north off the province's capital, Uíge.

Rains leave over 50 families homeless in Cachiungo

Cachiungo - At least 57 families of Chiumbo commune, Cahiungo municipality, central Huambo province, are homeless, following the heavy rains and strong winds hitting the region, says the Administrator José Chissaluquila.

Commenting of the calamity, he said were destroyed 30 residences, a chapel and two primary schools. The administrator also said works are in progress to get some zinc sheets to accommodate the mentioned people

Heavy rain destroys five houses in Njele

Kuito – At least five houses built of local materials in the neighborhood of Njele collapsed in Kuito district, central Bie province, as a result of the heavy rains that hit the town, ANGOP learnt on the spot.

According to the citizen Faustino Caliata, heavy rains caused the destruction of all their possessions and are currently accommodated with some relatives in the neighborhood of Njele.

The residences were built of adobes and zinc plates.

Over 300 kilometres of road demined in Kuando Kubango

Menongue – At least 344 kilometres of roads were demined in 2012 by the third brigade of the Angolan Army, informed Wednesday to ANGOP the head of military engineering sector of the Southern Military Region’s 5th Division Headquarters, lieutenant-colonel, Gorge António.

The Lieutenant-colonel stressed that 150 kilometres of Mavinga-Mawe road were cleared, while between Rito and Mawe localities, an extension of 196 kilometres, 37 of those were also cleared.

Rain leaves more than 40 families homeless

Luau – Forty five families are homeless in the municipality of Luau, eastern Moxico Province, due to the rains befalling the region, announced Thursday the assistant administrator of the municipality, Nora Mahongo Isaac.

Speaking to ANGOP about the situation of victims in Luau, Nora Mahongo Isaac, who is also coordinator of the Municipal Civil Protection Commission, said most families are sleeping in the open and others were accommodated by their relatives.

Rains leave 1,386 families homeless in Mbanza Kongo

Mbanza Kongo – At least 1,386 families were left homeless in Mbanza Kongo, Northern Zaire Province, following the heavy rains that hit the city on Tuesday night, says the civil protection and fire department.

The rains destroyed 231 residences, being 122 in 11 de Novembro and 109 in SagradaEsperança wards, surroundings of Mbanza Kongo city, adds the source.

The rains also injured seven people that are receiving medical treatment in the local provincial hospital, says the department.

Over eleven square million metres demined in Lunda Norte

Dundo – Over eleven square million metres of land were demined last year in the north-eastern Lunda Norte Province, in operations carried out by the region’s demining brigades.

These data come on an assessment report from the local branch of the National Demining Institute (INAD) read to the press in Dundo City, by the head of department of the mentioned institution, Sapalo Rufino, after closing of a seminar designed to update the demining techniques, which lasted two weeks.

Land reserves cleared out

Kuito - At least 80,000 metres of land reserves designed for constructions of social houses in districts of the central Bié province are free from landmines, following the demining operation carried out by National Demining Institute (INAD) in 2012.

This was disclosed Friday to Angop in Kuito by the head of department of the institution, Bernabé Frederico.

He underlined that INAD cleared out the landmines reserve of districts in Chinguar, Kamacupa, Katabola, Kunhinga and Nhârea.
