Improving maternal health in Jonglei State: new maternity ward established

7 February 2013, South Sudan – Nine months after starting work on Bor State hospital, WHO has handed over a fully equipped maternity ward to Jonglei State health authorities. The new ward, built by WHO with funds from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), is a 40-bed health facility with modern maternity equipment.

Displaced people in Pibor at high risk of possible disease outbreaks

20 January 2012, JUBA (WHO South Sudan): There are threats of possible vector borne, water borne and respiratory tract disease outbreaks, and malnutrition among the displaced population in Pibor county. The displacement follows intertribal clashes in the last week of December 2011 and first week of January 2012 in which over 60,000 people from Pibor,Lekuangole, Fertait, Bilait, Dorein and others were displaced with many other areas were displaced while many others either reported wounded or dead.

Briefing notes - South Sudan, 13 January 2012

Following the clashes in northern Jonglei, health facilities in the affected areas were destroyed and subsequently closed.

Pibor Health Care Centers and Lekuangole and Gumruk Health Care Units which were run by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) in Pibor county were destroyed. Equipment and supplies were also vandalised.

At the height of the clashes, most of the victims and others with health needs may have been unable to seek health services due to the security situation.
