CCRIF Quarterly Report 1 December 2012 – 28 February 2013

The Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) is the first multi-country risk pool in the world, and is also the first insurance instrument to successfully develop parametric policies backed by both traditional and capital markets. It is a regional catastrophe fund for Caribbean governments designed to limit the financial impact of devastating hurricanes and earthquakes by quickly providing financial liquidity when a policy is triggered.

In Trinidad, Causes Debated as Flooding Worsens

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, May 12 2013 (IPS) - Officially, the Caribbean’s rainy season begins in June, coinciding with the start of the hurricane season. But recently, heavy rains have signalled an early start to the rainy season, flooding streets, swelling rivers and causing widespread damage to crops.

“With global warming, you have to expect anything these days,” Shiraz Khan, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Farmers’ Association (TTFA), told IPS.

Full-scale test today of Caribbean tsunami warning system

Thirty-two countries* will participate in a full-scale tsunami alert exercise in the Caribbean on 20 March 2013. The goal is to test the reaction capacity in countries of the Caribbean and adjacent regions, including the East Coast of Canada and the United States, the Gulf of Mexico and Bermuda. The exercise was organized under the auspices of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

New partnership to improve mitigation of risk from earthquakes in the Caribbean

National Disaster mechanisms boosted with ERC project support

Relief for affected Marabella residents

The Ministry of the People and Social Development has distributed approximately $3 million in relief to residents of Diego Martin who were affected by inclement weather in Diego Martin and environs.

Minister of the People and Social Development, Dr Glenn Ramadarsingh announced during a visit to the “Train Line”, Bayshore, Marabella to bring relief to residents who were also affected by inclement weather on the weekend.

“We must as a people and a caring Government respond to the needs of all citizens regardless of whom or where you are,” Ramadharsingh said.

Housing Ministry distribute $1.8 million in cheques to flood affected persons

The Ministry of Housing, Lands and Marine Affairs has distributed $1.8 million in grants to those who were affected by floods in early August.

In a process that would usually take up to six months, Government was able to expedite and distribute cheques to at least 100 families from the Diego Martin, Maraval, Carenage and Laventille.

The residents were presented with cheques which ranged from $7,000 to up to $30,000.

The high-level group which oversees progress on the Commonwealth’s gender equality targets has agreed on a clear set of markers for measuring efforts in member countries.

The Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action Monitoring Group, which is made up of ministers and senior officials, met in London from 30 June to 2 July.

GENEVA, 15 June 2012 - As the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season kicks off, all 16 member governments of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) have committed for the sixth year in a row to renew their hurricane and earthquake insurance for 2012-2013 and earned themselves a 25% premium rebate.

OAS General Assembly: Member States Agree Steps Must be Taken to Improve Food Security

The member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS), meeting in Cochabamba, Bolivia, have underscored the need for action to improve food security in the Americas, including current and future proposals to provide their citizens with access to abundant, safe, and nutritious food.

This was the consensus coming out of the second plenary of the forty-second OAS General Assembly. The plenary ran from Monday into Tuesday.

Empress Shoken Fund: Supporting Red Cross Red Crescent work for 100 years

2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Empress Shoken Fund, which was created in 1912 by Her late Majesty the Empress of Japan to support Red Cross and Red Crescent activities worldwide. Over the past century, the fund has grown substantially thanks to contributions from the Japanese government, the Japanese Red Cross Society, the Imperial Family and the Meiji Jingu shrine.

The facility, which will replace the old one toppled by the 2010 earthquake, will be built following strict construction standards. And as its principal, Francius Saintilus, remarked at a recent groundbreaking ceremony, the new school will have a big impact in this village in the mountains behind Port-au-Prince.
