BANGKOK — Doctors across Southeast Asia are on alert for outbreaks of a strain of the virus that causes hand, foot and mouth disease, responsible for killing scores of children across Asia in recent months. Medical authorities say the peak of the outbreak still has not been reached.

Reports of outbreaks of the virus that causes hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) have cropped up in countries across Asia in recent months, mainly affecting young children.

The hardest hit has been China with more than 1.2 million cases and over 350 deaths.

Pillay urges ASEAN to set the bar high with its regional human rights declaration

GENEVA (11 May 2012) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Friday offered her encouragement to ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) in drafting a regional human rights declaration, but called for a meaningful consultation on the draft with the widest spectrum of people in the region before it is presented to ASEAN’s foreign ministers in July.

More Effective Disaster Monitoring and Response System for ASEAN Through Collaborative Effort of AHA Centre and the USA

The ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre) is working with a team of international specialists, supported by the U.S. Government, to develop an ASEAN Disaster Monitoring and Response System (DMRS). The system will allow the Jakarta-based Centre to visually monitor, geographically detect and synthesize multiple streams of data on hazardous events or disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, cyclones, floods, and other natural disasters.

Singapore to spend $598 mln to boost flood defences

SINGAPORE, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Singapore will spend about S$750 million ($598 million) over the next five years to boost flood defences, following an increase in the number of flash floods that have hit key areas including the main Orchard Road shopping belt.

The projects include widening and deepening existing canals such that they can hold up to 45 percent more water in times of heavy rain, national water agency PUB said in a statement on Monday.

US offers disaster help to Asia-Pacific

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The United States on Friday announced a new Internet platform to fight disasters across the Asia-Pacific region as it urged greater investment and cooperation to save lives and costs.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton led a session of foreign ministers of the 21-member APEC bloc devoted to disaster resilience after a year of tragedy including earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand and floods in Southeast Asia.

MANILA, 22 July 2009, 16:00 hrs - The emergence of the Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 virus presents a new set of health challenges to those living with immunosuppressive diseases such as HIV/AIDS. This is particularly so in the Western Pacific Region where many people suffering from the disease lack ready access to the high-quality medical care they need to prolong their lives.

People living with HIV/AIDS are one of several categories of people at higher risk of becoming seriously ill from Pandemic (H1N1) 2009. In the Western Pacific Region this risk is heightened.

Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 now the dominant flu strain in Singapore, Taiwan (China)

MANILA, 21 July 2009, 1600 hrs - Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 has become the dominant strain of influenza in Singapore and Taiwan (China), local health authorities said, as Guam and Tonga reported their first deaths associated with the virus.

Guam's Department of Public Health and Social Services reported the death of a 26-year old woman with pre-existing medical conditions who had also tested positive to Pandemic (H1N1) 2009. New Zealand, Australia warn Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 will stretch health system

MANILA, 15 July 2009, 1600 hrs - Health authorities in New Zealand and Australia warned of an increased strain on intensive care units over the next few weeks as cases of Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 continued to grow significantly.

New Zealand Health Minister, Tony Ryall, said the visits to health clinics would put more pressure on the health system as flu season peaked. "The public can expect to see full intensive care units and some surgery being cancelled at various public hospitals around the country over the next few weeks," Mr Ryall said.

Singapore ends temperature screening at borders for Pandemic H1N1

Early summer break called for Hong Kong (China) schools to cut flu risk

MANILA, 10 July 2009, 1600 hrs - The summer holidays have been brought forward for 43 secondary schools in Hong Kong (China) in an effort to curtail the spread of Pandemic H1N1 2009, health authorities said, as 57 new infections were detected in the territory. The Department of Health called on parents to pay attention to the health of their children, and to ensure they practiced good personal hygiene.

On 9 July, New Zealand announced its sixth death linked to Pandemic H1N1, that of a woman with underlying health conditions. The number of reported cases in New Zealand now exceed 1 500.
